Urate Stone Disorder is a genetic condition that sees an increased production of uric acid, which in turn can lead to urinary calculi (stone) formation, which may require surgical intervention to remove. It is an issue which has recently been drawn to our attention has affected HWV.
Although there seems to be only a small number of dogs within the breed actually suffering from related issues, given a genetic mode of inheritance has been discovered that should make it relatively straightforward to “breed out” this problem, it makes sense to try to do so.
Swabs can be DNA tested by the AHT. This process involves purchasing the test from the AHT, who will send out the kit to do the swab. Taking the swab is simple and involves rotating the swab around on the inside of the animals cheek. Once the swab is returned to the AHT results are sent back usually in a few days. Further details can be found here. Kennel Club Assured Breeders can get a discount on the cost of DNA testing.
|In order to encourage people to test their HWV involved or potentially to be involved in a breeding program and with the intention of gathering further information on the prevalence of the mutated gene within the breed, the HWVA is currently offering it’s members £10 refund on the cost of the test on receipt of their certificate of testing. The information on the certificate will be held in complete confidence by the association. To receive your £10 refund on testing send your certificate to email@example.com|
In addition to the refund above the HWVA can also obtain a 20% discount on purchase of the swab kit from the AHT (this cannot be used in conjunction with any other codes) if 20 tests are ordered. If you would like a code use our sign up form to register your interest and once we have reached 20 tests we will email you the code which is valid for a month after we send it.
