Hungarian Wirehaired Vizsla Association – Breed Open Show

11th June 2023

Judge: Michael Masters (Manchela)

Thank you to the Officers and Committee for inviting me to judge their Breed Open Show, my steward for keeping the show on the road and a special thank you to the exhibitors who stayed to show their dogs under me (the third show) on a warm day. I felt that everyone was very tired from the organizers, the exhibitors and more importantly the dogs that I am sure would have put on a better performance earlier on in the day.  My general observations were the variation in size and type, some exhibits carrying too much weight and one or two well underweight. I am delighted to say that I found some good depth of quality and my unbeaten line up in both dogs and bitches was very pleasing to see. I was impressed to see that my best dog and best bitch share the same sire, for me they were a matching pair.

Minor Puppy Dog – 1 Entry, 1 absent

Puppy Dog – 5 entries, 1 absent

  • Moss’ EWTOR BARKING AT THE MOON

I judged this super young dog about three months ago and then found him a force to be reckoned with. He is a very impressive youngster but today I found a dog that has lost his confidence, bloom and sparkle. His construction and balance is text book and his breed type right up my street. I do hope that he comes back to his previous form.  BPD & BPIS

  • Davidson’s FARNFIELD HUNTSMEN

Not a big one! A fair head type but very slow in body development. He needs to drop, body up and mature on. Could be better in upperarm but liked his breed type, balance, hindquarters and moved ok. Hope he makes it!

  • Grey’s ZENZOES ROMEO WITH OAKBERROW

Junior Dog – 4 Entries, 2 Absent

  • Spillane’s BETATARR KODIAK

Impressive young dog, couldn’t take my eyes off him, he dominated my mind whilst judging the males and I couldn’t find anything to beat him in the later classes. He has a most appealing masculine, shapely head with lively and intelligent expression, clean, slightly arched neck. Well constructed front assembly with good depth to brisket. Moderately well sprung in ribs that extended well back to short loin, strong quarters with good width over the rear. A rich russet harsh wire jacket completed the picture. Moved sound holding a firm shape in profile, covering the ground with ease. Best Dog & RBIS

  • Tasker’s ZOLDMALI EZMI (IMP SERB)

Another quality exhibit with an attractive head piece, well made in front but not so mature in body or as firm in topline as 1. Would like to see him with a few months on his back.

Yearling Dog – 2 Entries, 1 Absent

  • Harris’ FITZROVIA TAKE A CHANCE

Stood alone but a worthy winner. Appealing head, strong front construction with required depth, bone and well shaped, arched tight feet. Moved sound holding a striking shape in profile.

Novice Dog – 2 Entries, 2 Absent

Graduate Dog – 1 Entry, 1 Absent

Post Graduate Dog – 0 Entries,

Limit Dog – 4 Entries, 1 Absent

  • Harris’ FITZROVIA GIDEONS WAY

Attractive masculine head type with intelligent expression. Strong in bone with correct feet. Well made in front with good depth, hindquarters to match with hocks well let down. Moderate and balanced throughout, moved out and back sound holding a firm topline in profile.

  • Davidson’s THROSTLENEST HELIOS

A size smaller but beautifully formed! His head, type and balanced appealed to me and his movement was sound.

  • Collier’s BELATARR AMERICA

Open Dog – 1 Entries, 0 Absent

  • Spillane’s BELATARR JUPITER

A mature boy that filled my eye for his breed type and balance from his appealing masculine head to his well set tail. He has a well constructed front with bags of depth to his chest, strong bone and good feet (although I feel his nails could be shorter). Well sprung in rib extending well back to short loin. He has thick first and second thighs, hocks well let down. Sound on the move with impressive side gait. I felt his younger kennelmate had the edge today. Res Best Dog.

Veteran Dog – 0 Entries,

Minor Puppy Bitch – 3 Entries, 3 absent

Puppy Bitch –1 Entry, 1 Absent

Junior Bitch – 3 Entries, 1 absent

  • Lewis’ ENRYB LILY THE PINK

I was very impressed with this girl, but not at first glance. She is not one that takes your eye immediately. At closer inspection I could not resist her and found her to fit the breed standard extremely well and of the type that I clearly am drawn to. As she gained confidence I could see her qualities shining through, even more so on the move which was sound and captivating, covering the ground with ease. Best Bitch & BIS

  • Loynd’s ENRYB TICKLED PINK JW

Litter sister to 1 but so difference in type, has lovely breed type and many attributes are shared. I am sure they will change places on many occasions and believe they did earlier in the day. I found my winner more together on the move, more striking in side gait and tidier in front action today. I am sure the heat played it’s part.

Yearling Bitch – 1 Entry, 0 absent

  • Cooper’s HAZEAN DONETSK TO DEIFSTOCK (IKC) JW

This bitch is beautiful for size, make and shape with well made front assembly, well sprung in the rib with good depth and firm topline. She has moderately angulated hind quarters, with thick thighs and good width over the rear. Disappointingly her hind action was very erratic as I believe she was in season which clearly played it’s part, shame!

Novice Bitch – 0 Entries

Graduate Bitch – 0 Entries,

Post Graduate Bitch – 3 Entries, 2 Absent

  • Holt’s MALASHY AKORI

A very sweet girl who handled well and has good breed type, well ribbed and strong hind quarters.  I considered her to be overweight which spoilt the picture and movement.

Limit Bitch – 2 Entries, 1 absent

  • Branney’s BELATARR ASIA

A mature bitch who appeals greatly for breed type, balance and construction throughout.  I loved her head and that lively, intelligent expression. Her front has desired lay back of shoulder, return of upper arm and depth to brisket, hind quarters to match which enabled her to drive and reach covering the ground with ease holding a level topline. She also captivated my heart and pushed the Junior all the way.

Open Bitch – 4 Entries, 1 Absent

  • Richardson’s SH CH TRAGUS FLIRTY FOX

A beautifully made bitch with so much to like and it is clear how she gained her title. I liked her for size and breed type, moderate with no exaggerations. Appealing, shapely head with correct expression, everything fits seamlessly together. She moves sound and steady. Considered for top honours.

  • Cooper’s DEIFSTOCK DESERT ROSE

Another quality bitch  with appealing head and eye. Well sprung in the rib but would prefer them extending a little further. She has good strong bone and tight feet, well muscled quarters, moved sound.

  • Moss’ ENRYB SCARLET O’HARA AT EWTOR

Veteran Bitch – 2 Entries, 1 absent

  • Newman’s LANOKK VIOLESKA

8 years young and still moving sound and sprightly after a long hot day, loved her head type, well made front assembly, correct in body with correct ribbing. Sound on the move, fore and aft. BVIS

Critiques

I would first like to thank the HWVA for the invitation to judge their open show, and for their hospitality, and to thank Karen for being my lovely steward for the day. I was also very grateful to everyone who entered their dogs in this open show, I appreciate your support.

As someone who likes to watch the dogs in the working environment, I found some were not robust enough and some that were too long, low and coarse for a good days work, but pleased that coats were generally double and protective, mouths were generally good, as were feet.

Puppy Dog 1 (0)

1 HARRIS Fitzrovia Gideons Way – Great coat and rich colour, nice head with correct furnishings, nice lay of shoulder and tight elbows, could be on shorter legs but moved well. Will be impressive when matured. Very close in the challenge for Best Puppy. RBPIB

Graduate Dog 1 (0)

1 WHITING Navarro Del Fatalbecco at Cragvaille (Imp Italy) – Very well-built dog of the correct size. Excellent deep chest, correct head with kind eye, would like to see him with a tidier coat. Firm footed on the move.

Limit Dog 5 (0)

1 DAVIDSON Throstlenest Helios – A smaller built dog with a good coat, nicely angulated, good tail set. Nicely constructed fore and aft, leading to well-balanced movement with drive RBD

2 WHITING Zoldmali Iszkiri at Cragvallie – Larger than 1, solidly built with good balance resulting from great angulation. Much heavier coated, good head and front construction, Moved solidly with drive.

Open Dog 1 (0)

1 DEIGHTON Fourlums Tavaszi – Good close dark coat, correct head with level planes, nice deep chest, well laid shoulder, moved well – BD & Res BOB

Veteran Dog 3 (0)

1 HOWARD Llanokk Szivos JW -Youngest of the 3 in good coat, was a little wide in head and chest, but moving well

2 HOWARD Zoldmali UR Special (Imp Hungary) -Smaller than 1 but a nice overall picture, correct head and kind eye, a little overweight affecting movement.

Minor Puppy Bitch 1 (0)

1 JONES Dansopity Ocknell –8 months Pretty head, good deep chest for her age and close coupled. Lacking in coat, it should come, showed some good movement but needs to settle.

Puppy Bitch 3 (0)

1 EDMINSON Kidsons Happy memories – Pretty little girl, smaller size and very well balanced, prominent pro sternum, moved very well for her age. Coat paler and overstripped. Wagged her tail all day. The dog puppy challenged her well for best puppy, but this girl looked at me with the same face as my favourite HWV bitch ever, which just swung it for her. PB BPIB

2 HARRIS Fitzrovia Amber Nectar- litter sister to the dog puppy, taller and narrower than 1, but a better coat of darker colour. Pretty head, eye to darken. Well-muscled for her age moved well but maturity should widen her body and improve foot placement.

Junior Bitch 1(0) Yearling bitch 2(1)

1 NEWMAN Morganna Anise- Stood alone in these two classes. On shorter legs and wide at chest, heavier built, but a heavy coat obscured her outline somewhat. Very straight topline lacking in a sloping croup. Moved out well with good rear drive from the straightest of pasterns.

Novice Bitch 4 (2)

1 NEWMAN Morganna Anise- As above

2 HAMMANS Zoltarous Guelder Rose Very similar size and head to 1, lighter build and coat density, better topline and croup. A close call and only lost out today with less straight pasterns making her move close behind.

Graduate Bitch 2(0)

1 NEWMAN Morganna Anise- As above

2 LEWIS Adel Liliana – petite little bitch, lighter in build and colour, pretty head, well balanced fore and aft but tended to arch her back when stacked, spoiling the outline. Improved on the move.

PG Bitch 3 (1)

1 NOKES Tanselle at Goldpaw – A lighter built bitch, lighter coat, pretty head and good eye. Nice and straight front and back, straight hocks. Moved with determination.

2. COURT Twelveoaks Carolina Red – Heavily built for a bitch, lower and longer build with straight topline but no sloping croup. Heavy wire coat, moved around the ring well

Limit Bitch 4 (1)

1 COOPER Deifstock Desert Rose – Very nice for size and outline. Good colour and texture to the coat. Well laid shoulder and good return of upper arm, close coupled and nice upright pasterns. Moved with balance and good drive. BB & BIS

2 ALDRIDGE Gwaithmaes Aoife Slightly smaller than 1, well balanced, but standing a little wide at front, and pasterns not quite upright, muzzle just slightly longer but still a pretty face, good coat and colour, moved out well.

Open Bitch 3 (2)

1 EDMINSON Sh Ch Kidson Custom Made – Very nice type, well balanced with good angulation, good coat and colour and a correct head. Moved well RBB

Veteran Bitch 3(1)

1 DEIGHTON Kidsons Attribute – a well-balanced nicely put together bitch, nice front construction, just a little less drive now from the rear. Good correct coat. BV

2 COURT Honey Buzzard – A few months older than 1, a heavier bitch, well put together good angulation and pretty head. Showing her age a little today in movement.

Critiques

My thanks to the exhibitors for presenting me with a lovely entry. I thoroughly enjoyed my judging and appreciated the sporting manner in which my decisions were accepted.

MINOR PUPPY DOG (1-0)

2nd Clymer’s Phantomfuror Guava

Open (8,3a)

Excellent mover.

Critiques

Minor Puppy Dog (1, 0abs)

1st Newman Morganna Zatar

Well grown puppy with a pleasing head and eye, could be cleaner through the neck.  He has a well angulated front, just right for bone and has excellent feet. Deep enough in body, could carry a little more weight. Strong quarters, well muscled, hocks well let down.  Excellent tail set and carriage.  Positive mover for one so young.  Coat still needing some time to develop. BPD

Puppy Dog (1, 0abs)

1st Newman Morganna Zatar

As previous class.

Junior Dog (4, 0abs)

1st Spillane Belatarr Jupiter

Up to size dog who has excellent bone, legs and feet.  Liked his head and expression, super furnishings.  Clean though the neck, well angulated front,  strong in topline, tail well set and carried.  Longer in loin than ideal.  Excellent coat.  Move out freely in all directions.

2nd Thomas Hookster Tompa at Odinsmoke

Heavier dog all though, deeper in head and needs more furnishings but he has eyes of good shape and colour. Well made all through and with plenty of substance. Well angulated all though.  An excellent moving dog, needs his coat to complete the picture.

Graduate Dog (4, 0abs)

1st Gray & Riley Fassfields Silver Lining

Best for overall balance in this class, pleasing expression, maybe a touch long in foreface.  Enough bone, straight legs and excellent feet. Strong level topline, steep in croup and rather gets his tail up especially when moving.  Moves straight and true and looks positive going around in profile.  He has a pleasing coat texture and was well presented.

2nd Belassie-Page Bardantop Treacle Tart

More moderate dog than 1, but retaining balance, pleasing head but could be better furnished.  Firm in topline, tailset and carriage not his fortune. Stands on well boned legs and he has good feet. Moved ok.

Post Graduate Dog (4, 1abs)

1st Gray & Riley Fassfields Silver Lining

As previous class

2nd Smith Indriel Faramir

A dog of the type which appeals to me, I like his expression, a little heavy in back skull.  Good forehand, excellent bone and feet. Carrying far too much weight which affected his topline and impacted on the move.  He has an excellent coat of good texture but it could do with a bit more attention.

Limit dog (4, 1abs)

Difficult decision between two quality dogs.

1st Moss Ewtor Nobody Does it Better

Medium sized dog with a striking outline, typical in head, pleasing expression.  Strong in neck, shoulders well laid, well boned legs and good feet.  Strong level topline, tail well set and carried.  Excellent moving fore and aft as well as in profile.

2nd Collier Belatarr North by Northwest

Another quality dog I have judged before more than once, stronger in head than I Prefer.  Up to size but very well constructed with excellent angulation front and rear. Presented in excellent coat and muscletone, a little restricted in the confined ring and not moving to his best advantage.

Open Dog (6, 0abs)

Great class with some excellent dogs.

1st Upton Sh Ch Tragus Fox Appeal

Quality dog who is typy and well balanced, masculine in head but not overdone, such a pleasing expression.  Strong neck, pleasing front, excellent bone, straight forelegs, elbows set close to body, and the best of feet. Well developed body, well ribbed back, strong through the loin and his topline never falters standing or moving.  Tail well set and carried.  Strong, wide and well muscled quarters.  Moved positively fore and aft and in profile.  In excellent coat of ideal texture. BD & BIS

2nd Newman Sh Ch Zoldmali Szeles Morganna (imp) JW

Another quality male of similar size to 1 though slightly longer cast and needing a little more width through his loin.  His head is of pleasing balance, eye could perhaps be fractionally darker in colour. Stands on excellent legs, straight and well boned with well padded feet. Excellent topline, super coat of pleasing texture.  Comes alive moving, particularly in profile.  RBD

Veteran Dog – No entry

Minor Puppy Bitch (2, 0abs)

1st Newman Morganna Anisette

Quality puppy with an excellent outline, perfectly balanced in her angulation.  Pleasing head, well furnished, like her expression.  Strong and clean through the neck, excellent front, bone and feet, good body depth, excellent topline, well ribbed and strong though the loin.  Excellent rear angulation and tail well set and carried.  Coat of ideal texture, just needs to grow, BPIS.

2nd Belassie Page Bardantop Treacle Tart

Tall upstanding bitch who is more moderate in her angulation than 1 however it is balanced.  Pleasing head, eyes still needing to darken a little. Clean through the neck, firm in body, strong level topline which she retained moving. Strong quarters well muscled which she used on the move.  Coat coming through and of good texture, just needs a bit more time to come together.

Puppy Bitch (2, 1abs)

1st Newman Morganna Anisette

As previous class

Junior Bitch (4, 2abs)

1st Aldridge Gwaithmaes Aoife

Medium sized bitch of correct type, pleasing overall balance, liked her head shape although it could be a little stronger.  Enough bone, good legs and excellent feet. Strong neck, pleasing topline, a little steep in croup.  Shown in excellent muscletone, she drove off strong short hocks.  Pleasing coat for texture.

2nd Bendikas Holman Electra

Up to size bitch of pleasing type, holds a great outline standing and moving. Stands on the best of legs and feet, coat of excellent texture.  A real shame she was  not wanting to be handled, will have better days.

Graduate Bitch (2, 2abs)

Post Graduate Bitch (4, 3abs)

1st Upton Tragus Honey Bee

Adolescent bitch  who still needs a bit more time, undoubtedly feminine, excellent eye shape and colour and an intelligent expression. Strong neck, straight forelegs, could be firmer in pasterns and feet.  Body developing well, coat also developing well, firm in topline, carries tail a little high.  Moved ok once she settled.

Limit Bitch (4, 1abs)

1st Moss Electra Atlantis at Ewtor

Shade larger size bitch with an appealing outline, excellent head of good balance, intelligent expression.  Straight forelegs, good bone and well padded feet.  Enough depth to her body, firm in topline, tail well set and carried.  Well angulated rear, excellent muscletone.  Positive mover, particularly free in profile.  Coat recently stripped and needing time to regrow.

2nd Bendikas Holman Wirestone from Morganna

Bitch of pleasing colour, strong head, strong through the neck, shoulders well placed, pleasing bone, ok feet.  Body just deep enough, ribbed quite well back, holds a level topline standing and moving although steep in croup and tail is carried high.  Moved straight and true.

Open Bitch (2, 0abs)

Two quality bitches.

1st Collier Sh Ch Belatarr Mahalia Jackson SH Cm

Upstanding Bitch of excellent type, like her head, pleasing eye colour and shape, good furnishings, strong neck, excellent front, straight forelegs, bone and feet.  Strong firm topline, well developed ribs, good depth of chest.  A little long in loin perhaps, tail well set and carried.  Strong and well muscled quarters, well angulated rear.  Excellent coat of pleasing texture.  Moved out freely in all directions.  BB & RBIS

2nd Newman Sh Ch Morganna Star Anise JW SH CM

Another quality bitch I have admired from ringside, pleasing head, like her expression, eyes of pleasing shape and colour.  Strong neck, excellent forehand, shoulders well placed, the best of legs and feet.  Correct for depth of chest although tending to lose her topline whilst stood.  Strong quarters, well muscled, hocks well let down, free moving in all directions.  Not in her best coat here. RBB

Veteran Bitch (2, 1abs)

1st Kemillix Sparta of Eurotas at Goldpaw

12 1/2 year old bitch belying her age, pleasing head shape, intelligent expression.  strong neck, straight well boned forelegs and retaining good feet.  Body deep enough, firm in topline, well muscled quarters.  Her coat was of pleasing texture and she moved freely in all directions. BVIS

pecial Awards

Special Award Junior Dog or Bitch

  1. Gwaithmaes Aoife. Just a year old and standing alone but she has breed type with her pretty and balanced head and excellent wire coat. She is a little round in croup and could have a tad more bend of stifle but she uses her quarters well on the move.

Special Award Post Graduate Dog or Bitch

  1. Tragus Honey Bee. Typey, well balanced girl with a lovely outline and well set tail, good depth to chest and well ribbed. Pretty head of good proportions, moderate stop and an intelligent expression. Arched neck, good shoulders and moderate hindquarters. Well-presented coat of good texture. Slightly unsettled at the start of the class, but soon got her act together. Liked her very much. 2. Fassfields Silver Lining. A lovely bitch with a decent front and good bone and feet but she has a little too much stop for my preference. She is sound throughout and moves well. 3.Twelveoaks Walnut

Special Award Open Dog or Bitch

  1. Sh Ch Tragus Fox Appeal. Extremely typical, robust dog that I have done well for before. Typey well furnished head with well placed ears and moderate stop, straight front, well laid shoulder & return of upper arm, correct rib, ample depth, and a strong well muscled loin. Great croup and tail set. Put down in lovely condition as always from this kennel; with his harsh jacket he couldn’t be ignored! I was delighted to have the opportunity to judge him here again today and although he was pushed very hard by 2nd place, his attitude and presence won him 1st again today.
  2. Sh Ch Belatarr Mahalia Jackson Sh.CM. She is beautiful! She has wonderful balance, a beautiful head with moderate stop, well set ears and very good furnishings. Her crested neck sets well in good shoulders, firm topline, good tail set and croup. She is robust and moderate all through with nothing exaggerated or out of place. To top it all off she has a great coat of good colour and texture. I was absolutely delighted to see her here again today! Thank you for bringing her. 3.Belatarr North By Northwest Sh.CM

Critiques

I would firstly like to extend my great thanks to the HWVA committee for the honour of inviting me to judge their Open Show and for the smooth running of the event on the day. Special mention must go to my steward and to the catering, both of whom kept the day flowing so very well. The venue was excellent and spacious, and, most importantly, allowed for the creation of a large ring which afforded good opportunity to enable the dogs to show their movement to advantage.

I must also extend equal thanks to all of the exhibitors who entered under me and who accepted my decisions on the day with such good grace. I was delighted with the quality of the entry and to have many high-quality exhibits to choose between.

I was seeking soundness of construction and motion. In particular, the correct height to length ratio (a number of exhibits were taller at the withers than they were long, which inevitably results in restricted movement) along with balanced angulation front to rear, devoid of exaggeration, allowing for an economic and accurate action. I was also looking for sufficient substance to allow for the key HPR unctions for which the breed was developed.

MPD (2,1)

1 Hosokter Tompa

A cracking start to the day. At just 6 months and 1 day old this moderately sized, mid-russet youngster was at his debut show. Extremely raw, his inexperience and excitement in the ring made him often rather wayward and bouncy on the move, however, when he did manage to keep all four paws on the floor he tracked perfectly straight and true. His construction is to die for and is matched with absolutely bags of substance and bone throughout – an exceptional width of upper thigh leading to a beautiful bend of stifle and legs held dead straight from his hocks to feet, coupled with a prominent forechest and well-layed and muscled shoulders, though, in common with most of the breed, he is just a touch short in upper arm. Terrific depth and spring of rib, exceptionally so for his age, and his chest has good length too. A pleasing neck leads to an ironing-board straight top-line, whilst super-tight feet and a well-proportioned head and lively expression complete the picture. When stacked he presented excellent balance and stood absolutely straight and true both front and back. His coat is only just beginning to come through… IF it develops correctly then he should have a very bright future and I will await with great interest to see how he matures. Even as he is his quality could not be denied today and I was pleased to award him BPD and then BPIS.

PD (2,1)

1Tragus Huggy Bear

A top-size 10-month youngster with terrific temperament – happy, enthusiastic and confident in the ring. Of very different type to the MPD, with a coat of pale golden sand which is profuse but of good texture. He has the most beautiful head with a truly melting expression and has a very good front assembly with a prominent forechest and good length of upper arm leading to a correctly placed shoulder. Ribs are very deep and already well-sprung and are also extended well back but he has a rather steep croup and is weak-hocked which shows particularly in his movement where his topline is erratic and pasterns also loose. Hopefully, he will grow into himself as he matures and builds further muscle tone to support his joints.

Junior Dog (3,1)

1 Zoldmali Szeles Morganna (Imp)

A 13-month-old boy, medium-sized and with a deep russet coat that is tight, harsh and full-body covering. I would prefer more facial furnishings to give a softer expression, but these may well develop with maturity. Overall, though, he is a most excellent exemplar of the breed, well proportioned throughout, very clearly masculine and presented in really top, muscular condition. Extremely well balanced, moderate angulation front and back, just as is called for, with a nice length of upper-arm and correctly placed shoulder and a perfect neckline leading to an equally perfect top-line, held both when stacked and on the move. He has adequate depth and good length of rib and the correct tail-set and croup, plus pleasingly tight feet. The total picture is one of balance and strength and he can only improve further as he matures. In profile, he has a strikingly effortless, ground-covering gait with a good daisy-cutter action and equal and matching reach and drive. I strongly considered him for BD, but, when viewed head-on he was unfortunately rather wide at the elbow and as a result was toeing in at the front feet, which cost him the very top honours today, but was pleased to award him RBD.
2 Zoldmali Misi

Slightly taller, deep russet boy of 17 months, of pleasing type with a coat of good texture that is not yet full-covering but which should continue to develop with time. Excellent facial furnishings, with prominent beard and eyebrows, provides for an appealing expression, though he is a touch long in muzzle. Very balanced angulation front and back allowed for an even, tidy gait and reasonably accurate tracking coming and going, with a level topline maintained well both on the move and in the stack. He has good width of thigh and well-set tail, but is rather too moderate in stifle and upright in his front construction with vertical pasterns and under-angulation of arm to shoulder, which limits his extension and drive respectively.

GD (2)

1 Moricroft Akos

This 17-month moderate-sized, deep russet boy displayed a lovely temperament and was confident and more than happy to show himself off in the ring. Very appealing for type with an excellent head – correctly proportioned, blunt in muzzle and slightly domed in skull, masculine but not coarse and with furnishings developing well, indeed his whole coat is of excellent texture and good coverage, including across the skull. Super top-line and good tail-set with the correct moderate croup and good pasterns. His chest still needs to drop, but this will improve with maturity. I would like more length of neck and, although his angulations are balanced, they are more moderate than I would like to see. In movement he was rather close both front and back and crabbed coming and going.
2 Indriel Legolas Greenleaf

A larger sized, 2-year old boy who I understand was at his first show and both he and his owner must be complimented for performing so well in the ring today where he really was a very contented boy. I see that he is half-brother to my Puppy Dog winner, and very similar comments apply. He has a profuse but well-textured coat of golden sand with a beautiful, very well-furnished head and absolutely melting expression. Very good, prominent forechest and pleasing in pasterns and front construction in general, with good length, depth and spring of rib giving very substantial heartroom. However, he has a very steep croup and extremely low tail-set which gives him a sloping top-line on the move that detracts from his overall picture.

PGD (4,1)

1 Fassfields Fame and Fortune

A 2-1/2-year-old medium-tall, mid-russet boy whom I liked very much. He has a very good coat, coarse, tight and full body-covering, though I would prefer just a touch more facial furnishings. Well-balanced, with correct pasterns and reasonable and equivalent, well-matched front and rear angulation. Could do with more depth of chest although his ribs are carried well back to a strong loin. His tail-set is a whisker high and I’d prefer more width of upper thigh, but where he really excelled was in movement where he proved to be the best of all of the males here today, consistantly straight and true coming and going with an excellent profile action, level top-line and matching reach and drive – really pleasing to watch in motion, in fact. Well handled and presented and that excellent movement meant that I considered him for RBD but the overall strengths of the JD pipped him on the day.
2 Auchinner Fionn

A 2-1/2-year-old, moderate-sized, dark-russet boy, nicely proportioned throughout, of generally good substance and so nice for type. A superb head with a blunt muzzle, moderate stop and refined skull, not over-wide and with well-set ears. He also had one of the best coats of the day, providing him with total body coverage, paired with equally good facial furnishings. Chest reaching to elbows and adequate in length, fair strength of neck and good topline leading to a good croup. His angulation is similar to 1, being moderate but matched front to rear and, like 1, I would prefer more width of upper-thigh and he is also a touch short-coupled. He lost out in this class when on the move where he didn’t demonstrate the tidiness and precision of 1, and both crabbed and was close behind.

1 Sh Ch Tragus Fox Appeal

A well-known and worthy Show Champion, medium sized and dark gold, and just 1 day shy of his second birthday. Expertly handled and presented to perfection, he is immediately impressive and commands attention with his ring-presence. He has a super coat, full body-covering and harsh in texture, is broad in muzzle and moderate in skull, with a powerful neck flowing into a good top-line, excellent croup and correct tail-set. He has good and evenly matched angulation with shoulders layed well-back and good bend of stifle; hocks are well let-down and pasterns are correctly sloping plus he has good, tight feet, whilst his chest is outstanding, particularly for his age, with ribs deep, long and well-sprung leading into a powerful loin, though I would prefer him a touch longer in body. In the stack he was absolutely solid, dead straight and true front to back, a picture of real substance, and devoid of any weakness. On the move, he was powerful in profile but tracked erratically coming and going with uneven footfall. I was pleased to award him BD and he came within a hairs-breadth of RBIS, but I just prefered the proportions and more precise tracking displayed by the bitch today.

1 Fassfields Like a Barones

Very pretty, super-feminine medium-russet 7-month old girl. Well proportioned and developing nicely for her age. Her coat has good coverage, is of reasonable texture and will doubtless develop further with maturity. An appealing head with excellent furnishings already in place, a good neck and fair top-line when stacked. She has good length or rib although chest needs to drop, as can be the case at this age. Angulation is moderate and well-balanced front to back with sufficient bend of stifle and length and return of arm, although she too upright in her pasterns. She really excels on the move where her balance shows to full effect giving her a good front action with matching reach and rear drive as well as excellent profile-carriage, with a level top-line – in short: tidy, efficient and effortless, exactly as required by the breed. She is a touch fine, but at just 7 months she obviously has time on her side and masses of development to come. A nice prospect for the future and I was pleased to award her BPB today.

2 Fassfields Pride Rock

Litter sister to 1, and these two girls are very much variations on a theme. At 7 months this girl has a marginally tighter and harsher coat than her sister, is slightly longer and taller in body and straighter in upper arm, with the same upright pasterns, but she has a super, dead-level top line, readily maintained at all times on the stack and in motion, and such a pretty head and neck. Her easy-flowing movement was also easily the match for her sister in profile and perhaps even more accurate coming and going with pretty-much flawless footfall – a joy to see! She just lost out to her sister today on account of her substance and depth of chest & strength of loin, all of which still have much development to come, but, at such a very young age, she could easily end up bettering her sister as she matures.
3 Vynesbrook Caribbean Red

PB (4)

Two very different young bitches, with utterly different strengths and weakness, lead to a tough choice in this class.

1 Fassfields Like a Baroness
2 Tragus Honey Bee

A 10-month-old, girl, deep russet in colour with one of the best coats of the day, short, tight, harsh, and full-body covering. When she first came in the ring she immediately looked like the obvious winner of this class, presenting great maturity of development and substance for her age with excellent proportions and just fabulous for type as well as being ideally sized for a bitch. When stacked there is also little not to like about her – a pretty, feminine and refined head with great eye pigmentation, strong neck, solid topline, perfect croup and tail-set and she impressed greatly with her strength of loin and length of rib. She is a little too upright in upper arm but her pasterns are good, feet tight and shoulder well-layed, together with a fair bend of stifle and decent width of thigh. Unfortunately, she was let down today by her gait, having a high-stepping, hackneyed front movement with loose pasterns – such a shame, and I do hope that maturity and added muscle tone settles her.
3 Fassfields Pride Rock

JB (2,1)

1 Vynesbrook Caribbean Red

Another pretty young girl, 8 months old with a golden sand coat of good texture. A very feminine head, well proportioned with gently domed skull and appealing furnishings developing beautifully. A shade larger than the other puppy bitches here today, but still of very pleasing and moderate size. She has a nice forechest and good lay of shoulder with super feet but is short in upper-arm and too upright in the pastern. Her topline is not always consistent at the moment but she has a very good upper-thigh/croup/tail-set combination. She has good depth of chest for her age, but I would prefer more length of rib. I would also like her longer in body and this is reflected in her movement which was somewhat hampered.

GB (6,3)

1 Holstan Wirestone From Morganna

This very nice class was headed up by this medium-sized, 2-year-old dark-russet bitch who has the perfect height to length ratio and is so well-balanced throughout. Her coat is of good texture and adequate coverage, although I would like more facial furnishings, but, as ever, these are still a work in progress at this age. In common with many others, she is too upright in the pastern, but she has the correct moderate and well-matched angulation front and back and a super, level topline. She moved absolutely beautifully (my note says: “the best moving dog so far!”) displaying reach and drive in equal measure with lovely, tight & accurate footfall coming and going and a superb carriage in profile. Classy & eye-catching, I strongly considered her for RBB, but she just lost out on maturity to a more fully developed bitch today.
2 Bardontop Plum Duff

Another whom I liked enormously, this 2-year old, mid-russet girl pleased in so many ways. My favourite head of the day, without question, beautifully proportioned, with superb furnishings and prominent, but not over-done beard & eyebrows, all giving a wonderful expression and the classic outline that is such a key element of the breed – I wish there were more like this! Beautiful for type she is also a perfect size for a bitch with substance and femininity balanced in equal measure and an excellent coat texture. Angulation is moderate and balanced, a little short in upper arm but well-layed in the shoulder, with fair depth and length of rib and a nice, moderate tuck-up in the loin, although, again, pasterns are too upright. She lost this class purely on her movement where, although pleasing in profile, she was, unfortunately, very close behind coming and going.
3 Leiborschy Maia Do Ones Best

PGB (3,1)

Just two bitches present in the class, but they also proved to be my top two dogs in the show.

1 Leiborschy Give A Tuppence With Swnydwr

This is what I was looking for. Just 22 months old, this top-sized, deep-russet bitch immediately caught my eye when she entered the ring with a structure and body-proportions that were peerless. Shown in hard condition, with excellent muscle-tone she simply exudes strength from every angle whilst remaining obviously feminine. She had the best front assembly on display at the show, with a superb forechest decent length of upper arm and powerful, well-layed shoulder plus a great neck leading smoothly into a totally level topline with the correct moderate croup and tail-set. She also had the deepest chest of the day, reaching below the elbow, with ribs well-sprung and carried well-back into an elegant, moderate tuck-up married to a really powerful loin. Her rear assembly is equally good, with fabulous width of thigh and superb bend of stifle, not over-done or over-extended, but allowing her full freedom of rear extension. All of this structural strength showed through when on the move, where she had excellent reach and drive with an unfussy, elegant and precise gait. Though at this age, her coat is still developing, she has good body coverage and a harsh coat texture. I hope she will also develop further facial furnishings to soften and complete the picture as she continues to mature. I was delighted to award her BB and BIS.
2 Lanokk Violeska

Another extremely nice girl, 2 1/2 years old and maturing well. She is smaller cast and is perhaps the optimal size for a bitch. She sports an excellent, super-harsh, full-body-covering mid-russet coat, certainly one of the best of the day, with a well-proportioned head, perhaps slighly broad in skull, but attractively furnished with prominent eyebrows and beard, full of character and expression. Although she doesn’t quite have the angulations of 1 she has both the balance and proportions that I was seeking, coupled with correct pasterns, and strong, straight hocks. When stacked she was absolutely straight and true front and back, and she showed and stood better each time she was called back to the ring. An excellent depth of chest and good length or rib, with a pleasing, moderately tucked-up loin completed the picture. Overall, masses of substance without any coarseness or excess. She moved well with a good driving rear action, and clean, even footfall, although her profile action is marred by a tail-carriage which is far too high but which I feel unjustly distracts from her other qualities. I was pleased to award her RBB and then, in a very tough call against the BD, RBIS.

Limit Bitch (3,1)

1 Tragus Apricot Beauty Of Carlequin

One who I have admired from the ring-side on many occasions, a quality, 4-year-old dark-gold bitch of perfect, moderate size. She has a coat of good texture and perfect, full-body coverage with lovely proportions throughout, a prominent forechest, good and matching angulation front and rear, an excellent ribcage and pleasing, moderate tuck-up. When stacked she is eye-catching and absolutely looks the part from every angle, with a good neck and level topline, correct pasterns and tail-set all completing that picture. On the move, she drives well but unfortunately was weak-hocked which prevented her from progressing any further today.
2 Fassfields Queen Jamillia

A moderately sized, 5-year-old bitch of completely different type to 1, dark russet with considerably fewer furnishings but, although her coat is rather too sparse, it is of good harsh texture. A good topline leads to a moderate croup and tail-set, all of which are pleasing though I would like more depth of chest, to match her age and maturity. She is more moderate throughout than 1, but remains balanced and showed a good gait in profile with excellent carriage, though was a little untidy coming and going.

Open Bitch (3,2)

1 Vynesbrook Savanna

A 4-1/2-year-old petite golden sand bitch whom I last judged when she was a puppy and am pleased to see how she has matured. She is the picture of femininity with a super head, gently rounded skull and blunt muzzle all complimented by excellent furnishings, giving a gentle, kindly expression. Her coat, overall, is now excellent in both texture and coverage and she pleases in body, with sufficient depth and excellent length of rib coupled with a slight tuck-up and strong loin. Feet are excellent and tight. A fair bend of stifle but would prefer more length and angle of upper-arm to point of shoulder. She does not always maintain her topline when stacked but has a strong croup and well-set tail. On the move, she was a little close both at front and back.

Veteran Bitch (1)

1 Kenmillix Sparta Of Eurotas At Goldpaw

At just shy of 11 years old, it was a real delight to see this girl thoroughly enjoying her day and displaying real enthusiasm, wagging her way all around the ring. She is mid-russet in colour with a good and still fully pigmented coat and showed-off what was superb dentition for any age of dog. A gentle expression is complemented by a dark eye and nicely set ears. She has a good deep chest, though would prefer more length of rib, and she moved well for age.

My thanks to the HWVA for inviting me to judge for them, to Rachel and Neil for the catering and to Sarah for her very efficient stewarding.  Most importantly, a big thank you to all the exhibitors who entered their dogs under me, it was a privilege to judge them.

I thought the quality of the dogs entered under me was very high.  From the dogs I judged today, I feel like we are starting to see definite improvements in the front constructions of the breed.  Although the breed standard allows for quite some variability in coats, all mine were decent today, with no extremes.  I found the sizes of the dogs I judged today pleasing.  I was really glad to find the temperament of the dogs in the ring really good, all were happy to be gone over with no obvious sign of nerves and I loved it when some of them wagged for me! I would like to see many eyes a touch darker although I don’t think the hall lighting helped and a lot of the feet a little tighter.

Special Award Junior Dog or Bitch (3)

A lovely class of youngsters.

1st: Zoldmali Szeles Morganna – As the oldest in this class this dog understandably stood out as being the most mature and “together” and shown to his advantage.  He had a very typey, moderately broad, slightly rounded head which was masculine without being too strong.  Nice oval eye shape, good med. earset and scissor bite.  He had a straight front stacked, with good length of upper arm and well laid shoulders.  He had nice length to his body and great substance of bone.  Moderate rear angulation.  His coat was a good harsh wire.  He moved fluidly although arguably slightly wide behind on this surface.  A lovely robust dog of good type.

2nd: Vynesbrook Caribbean Red – Less mature than 1 but as a youngster I don’t think this is a bad thing.  Good head shape and proportions.  Broad enough, creating a square appearance, without losing femininity.  Good facial furnishings and a gentle expression when she relaxed.  Good oval eye shape, scissor bite.  She had moderate angulation front and rear with nicely laid back shoulders.  Although she hunched a little initially as she got going and relaxed, both moving and stacked, she showed off her good length of body which just needs to fill out over time.  Tail set good.  Nice wire coat.  Would like a little more bone for ideal.  Good movement when she got going.  I look forward to seeing how she matures.

3rd: Fassfields Pride Rock – Another youngster who is again a little raw but has the basics to be a lovely bitch when she matures.  She also had a good head shape, which was broad but still feminine.  Her eye shape was oval and she had a kind expression.  Med earset, scissor bite.  Straight front and rear with fair lay of shoulder.  Her length: height ratio was good, with a level topline, her body just needs to deepen and fill out as she matures.  She has really super, tight, tidy feet.  Good wire coat.  Her movement was good and ground covering, slightly close behind today but I suspect that will change as her body strengthens up.

Special Award Post Graduate Dog or Bitch (5)

This was a really difficult class to judge with there being little to choose between the dogs and points about all of them.

1st: Bardantop Plum Duff – Moderately broad, slightly rounded head.  Oval eyes with tight lids.  Medium set ears and scissor bite.  Moderate, well matched angulation front and rear with nicely laid shoulders and well let down hocks.  Great length of body, more obvious when she settled.  Correct tail set. Good wire coat.  This bitch stood out by her movement which was flowing and super ground covering when viewed in profile.  Her strong, fluid action is just what the standard calls for in order for the dog to do a days work!

2nd: Lanokk Violeska – Good headshape with a “striking square” appearance.  Scissor bite.  She had the required moderate angulation front and rear and a good front with well laid back shoulders.  Her body shape was great – good length and depth with her ribs carried well back.  She had just the right substance of bone and a good wire coat.  Her movement was ground covering and fluid  with her profile on the move only spoilt a little by her tail being carried a little high.  Another quality girl, I am sure capable of a good days work.

3rd: Leiborschy Mai Do Ones Best – Headshape not quite as typical as those in front of her.  Med set ears and scissor bite.  Moderate angulation and straight in the front and rear with shoulders fairly laid back.  Great length of body with ribs carried well back shown to advantage on the move and when relaxed.  Good tight wire coat over her body.

I would like to mention my Res who had a really typey head and a good, tight wire coat developing and my VHC who had really good substance of bone and a really gentle expression.

Special Award Open Dog or Bitch (3, 2a)

1st: Vynesbrook Savanna – Headshape moderately broad and rounded.  Oval eyes.  Medium set ears and scissor bite.  Moderate length of neck.  Moderate angulation front and rear.  Body of good length and topline level when on the move.  Good wire coat and facial furnishings.  Fluid movement just let down a little by slightly flat feet which didn’t give the spring for maximum drive.

Critiques

Thank you to the committee of the HWVA for the invitation to judge its prestigious breed show and for the warm welcome. In keeping with the Hungarian theme I enjoyed a delicious goulash at lunchtime. Thank you to my steward and to exhibitors for your entries and for the good spirit in which you greeted my decisions.   Some dogs didn’t move as well as their profile suggested they should which affected placings.  There was strength in the bitches which made for some close decisions and I was very pleased with my final line up.

BIS was Pike’s Herlinga Zaffron to Zilvarson, RBIS Salisbury’s Belatarr Hercules, RBB Pryor’s Herlinga Helewise and RBD Aldridge’s Gwaithmaes Shameless. BV Nokes’ Kenmillix Sparta of Eurotas at Goldpaw. Best bitch puppy and BPIS was Canterwey Corrie of Forgun.  This was the most difficult class of the day and I apologise for making the two puppies stand longer than I would have liked. They are two really good puppies of different age and type.  Both very sound and well constructed the decision went with the older of the two who was more mature and more precise on the move. BDP was Upton’s Tragus Fox Appeal.

MPD (2, 1)

1. Mitchell’s Herlinga Herbert. Promising baby dog whose coat is coming through. He is a medium size russet dog with an attractive head, good hind angulation and correct body proportions.

PD (3, 1)

1. Upton’s Tragus Fox Appeal. Strongly made dog, plenty of bone and 12 months old on the day. Balanced all through. Masculine but not coarse well furnished head.  Good shoulder angulation, straight front, tight feet. Deep brisket, harsh coat. Unfortunately he didn’t move as well as I have seen him being a little unsettled on the floor. BPD.

2. Sutton’s Moricroft Akos. A minor puppy who lost out on maturity. Lighter boned than 1 with an attractive head, good hind angulation, tight feet and a harsh coat developing.

Grad D (3,1)

1.  Gower and Shaw’s Fassfields Fame and Fortune. Well balanced strong dog who drove well from behind holding his topline to take the class. Brisket well let down, good layback of shoulder, harsh coat.

2. Sitch’ Brown George. What a good harsh wire coat this boy has. He is medium sized and balanced. He has an attractive head and expression with good furnishings, but he was unsettled today both standing and on the move.

Post Grad D (4, 1)

1. Williams’ Ambermoore Diamond Heist Hollowmoor. Masculine with a good russet wire coat. Well made with good bone, attractive head and eye, good shoulder angulation, sternum, deep body, excellent hind angulation.  He moved positively.

2.Collier’s Belatarr North By Northwest.  Strong dog with plenty of bone.  Good angulation fore and aft with a harsh wire coat but wasn’t settled on the move.

3.Pope’s Zoldmali U R Special.

Limit D (7)

1. Spillane’s Belatarr Charlie Parker ShCM. Up to size with strong bone. He moved steadily with balanced, positive movement.  He has a good coat and furnishings. Body proportions correct, well angulated behind and stands on good feet.

2Rickman’s Fassfields Tan Divo by Herlinga. Different type to 1. A working dog at working weight with excellent musculature. Medium size, typical head and eye, harsh russet wire coat, good feet and hind angulation. He moved well.

3.Johnston’s Zoldmali Vodka

Open D (6,1)

1. Spillane’s Belatarr Hercules. BD and RBIS. Up to size with good bone and balance.  Attractive head with gentle, intelligent expression.  Deep chest and body, straight front, good feet. Harsh wire coat. Positive movement at one with his handler. Shown in excellent condition.

2.Aldridge’s Gwaithmaes Shameless. RBD. Thought he would be my winner but didn’t move as positively in front as 1. Super in profile he is strong, well-boned and all male. Attractive head and expression, harsh coat. He has depth and good ribbing, excellent hind quarters.

3. Rickman and Williamson’s Herlinga Heortwode.

MPB (6,2) A very mixed class in age, maturity and type.

1. Stafford and Clayton’s Galicar Game On Farnfield. A delightful baby puppy. Medium size and balanced. Good bone, attractive well furnished head. Good shoulders and upper arm, sufficient depth, good hind angulation. Plenty of harsh coat.  Enjoying her day but in the challenge for best puppy bitch was not as positive on the move.

2. Court’s Twelveoaks Maple. Up to size, russet, harsh coat coming. Correct body proportions and depth. Attractive head and expression, well angulated with good bone. Moved well.

3. Drew’s Moricroft Annuska

PB (6,4)

1. Issitt’s Canterwey Coree at Forgun. BPIS. A quality puppy with a harsh wire coat.  Balanced, feminine, medium size.  Attractive head with furnishings, gentle expression, neck into well placed shoulders, good upper arm. Body depth and length ratio correct with good ribbing and loin.  Tight feet, straight front. Well angulated behind she moved accurately holding her topline.

2. Quigley, Day and Piper’s Leiborschy Give a Tuppence with Swnydwr.  She is a well balanced russet puppy with attractive head and facial furnishings.  She has correct body proportions, good shoulder and upper arm and hind angulation. Very good in profile. Unfortunately she slipped badly on the floor and subsequently wasn’t confident on the move thereafter.

J B (5,1) A close decision between these two very promising bitches.

1.Newman’s Lanokk Violeska. Moved well. Harsh wire coat, good outline, correct front assembly, depth in body. Tight feet. Correct hind angulation enabled her to move positively and with drive.

2. West’s Genlusa Villany with Junetta. A super wire coat on this young bitch. Medium sized, good feet, well ribbed, pleasing outline. Moved well and held her topline.

3. Keedwell–Wirtz’ Firefrost Bramble

Grad B (3,1)

1. Court’s Honey Buzzard.  Excellent harsh wire coat, attractive head and expression. Good front assembly and body proportions. This bitch has a really good topline which she keeps on the move and she drove around the ring from well angulated rear quarters.

2. Holt’s Leiborschy Maia Do One’s Best. Unfortunately she wasn’t cooperating today and was quite unsettled thus she didn’t move as well as I have seen her move. She has depth in body, a good front and feet, correct hind angulation and a harsh wire coat.

Post Grad B (3,1)

1. Pike’s Herlinga Zaffron to Zilvarson. BB and BIS. I have watched this young lady since she won BPIS at the HWVA open show. Very much my type.  She is a sound, medium, moderate and workmanlike bitch with nothing overdone. Attractive head and expression with facial furnishings.  Good neck into well placed shoulders, correct front assembly, tight feet, correct height length ration, deep ribs, topped by a harsh wire coat. Good hind angulation  enabled her to power around the ring with good front extension keeping her excellent topline.  Wish she were mine.

2. Johnston’s Zoldmali Mokka. Another bitch I admire. Balanced, feminine and moderate with a good harsh jacket. Attractive head and expression, has depth of brisket and deep ribbing. Fit and well muscled she moved well and held her topline.

Limit B (3)

1. Pryer’s Herlinga Helewise. RBB Up to size, a strong, well boned bitch with very good conformation.  Attractive head, eye and expression. Good neck into well placed shoulders. Straight front, good height length ratio. Tight feet. Well angulated behind she moved accurately.

2.Richardson’s Tragus Apricot Beauty of Carlequin. Medium size, good balance and outline, harsh coat. Liked her head and expression. Good front and tight feet, well ribbed but not as positive in hind movement today.

Open B (4,2)

1. Collier’s Belatarr Mahalia Jackson.  Another from this successful kennel and very much from the same mold. Up to size this quality bitch stands over plenty of ground and has a good head with melting expression. Good bone, correct body ratios, well sprung ribs. Harsh coat, good feet. She drove from good hind angulation and held her topline on the move.

2.Upton’s Tragus Honey Buzzard JW. A medium sized bitch with nothing overdone. Good russet wire coat.  Attractive head and eye, strong neck into well placed shoulders. Correct body proportions and hind angulation but was not as settled on the move as 1.

Veteran B (1)

1. Nokes’ Kenmillix Sparta of Eurotas at Goldpaw. At almost ten years old this bitch doesn’t look her age. She has a harsh wire coat, good length to height ratios and is well angulated behind. She moved positively. BV.

Critiques

To be asked to assess your peers and colleagues dogs is an honour and privilege and I thank the committee and members for inviting me. It was late in the day when we started judging but the dogs and handlers were still on top form. I was looking for a balanced, medium sized dog with everything in moderation that moved with reach and drive and carried a correct wire coat, this was easier in some classes than others. The fairer sex has the depth of quality but I noted two things in both sexes that I feel need highlighting. I found a number of almost flat, broad, coarse skulls. This head shape gives a harsh, untypical expression and needs to be considered in future breeding. I also found quite a number of flat feet, splayed toes and long nails. The former may be more difficult to remedy but the latter is easy to rectify. Some nails were so long they were flattening the dogs’ feet on the carpeted ring. On the plus side, in the main, coat quality was very good and with the exception of two, mouths were correct

Minor Puppy Dog (3)

1. Collier’s Belatarr North by Northwest. 7 month old confident puppy with a correct golden sand coat. Well up to size for age and a little tall on his legs. Pleasing head and eye, they will darken, correct bite, straight front limbs, decent lay of shoulder, would prefer more angle to upper arm and pro sternum. Chest OK. Correct topline and croup, well developed rear. Moved out on a long, easy, accurate stride and was obviously enjoying himself. Best Puppy Dog and BP

2. Ryan’s Belatarr Vertigo. Litter brother to 1, darker, shorter, harsher coat. I preferred 2’s head. Correct bite. Well up to size, good bone, straight front limbs, deep enough chest. Masculine. Level topline and correct croup. This puppy had better balance but didn’t quite have the easy, smooth gait of his brother.

3. Jones’s Fassfields No Time To Lose.

Puppy Dog (1)

1. Harper’s Pitswarren St Louis. 9 months old, well grown, correct coat, deep brisket, sufficient bone. I felt for him today as he was a little over awed and this showed in his expression but he was handled sympathetically. Clean head, correct bite, furnishings coming. Balanced front and rear, correct croup, tailset and topline. Front a little loose and wide.

Junior Dog (4, 1)

1. Evan’s Tragus Prince Charming. A “Charming” 14 month old, balanced dog with a correct coat. A little broad in the back skull and would prefer less stop. Correct bite. Deep enough chest, good lay of shoulder and lovely neck, good bone. Correct topline and croup, well ribbed. When moved at a slower pace he showed his reach and drive. Very promising youngster.

2. William’s Ambermoore Diamond Heist Hollowmoor. Another nice youngster. Medium sized, 16 months old, preferred 2’s head. Balanced skull, moderate stop, Correct bite. Chest deep enough, would like more angulation front and rear, but he is balanced. Croup a little steep which, at times, affected his topline. Moved ok.

3. Sitch’s Brown George.

Graduate Dog (6, 1)

1. Howard’s Lanokk Szivos. Presents a pleasing, balanced, moderate picture. Very good coat but head requires stripping to reveal his lovely, correct skull, nice expression, correct bite. This dog had the balance and moderate angulation I was looking for. Well ribbed. Back. Correct topline, but could have a better slope to croup. His movement was sensible, would like a little more animation and a lower tail carriage. Easily won this class. Reserve Best Dog

2.Ryan’s Belatarr Sculptor. Well up to size, nicely made with quality bone. Well muscled and all male. Short, harsh coat, lacked furnishings. Pleasing head and eye, correct bite. Deep chest, would prefer more length and angle to upper arm and more pro sternum in order to give him balance. Correct topline and tailset. Moved out with more drive than reach.

3 Howard’s Zoldmali U R Special.

Post Graduate Dog (3,1)

 1. Spillane’s Belatarr  Hercules.A nice example and presented a balanced picture, correct coat, head would benefit from stripping. Nice, kind expression, balanced skull, correct bite. Chest deep enough, good spring of rib and ribbed well back. Pasterns could be better. Moved out effortlessly but occasionally lost topline on the stack with pin bones level with shoulders.

2. Godfrey’s Tragus Fire King.. Short, dark, harsh coat, lacked furnishings, preferred head on 1. Balanced front and rear, would prefer more angle to upper arm, correct bite, brisket OK. Correct topline and croup. Smart chap who moved well.

Limit Dog (2)

1 Spillane’s Belatarr Charlie Parker.  Upstanding, striking, balanced chap, Super head and expression, excellent coat, correct bite. Good lay of shoulder, excellent neck, well ribbed back, correct croup and tail set. Good feet. Moved with accurate footfall reflecting his balanced angles. On occasions lost topline on the stack. Seriously considered in the challenge.

2 Godfery’s Tragus Kestrel. Smaller frame, softer coat. Head OK, correct bite, level topline, chest deep enough.. Feet could be better. Croup a little steep resulting in him carrying his tail almost over his back, lacks width of second thigh. Moved OK.

Open Dog (4,1)

1. Aldridge’s Gwaithmaes Shameless. Quality, substantial, upstanding, impressive male, presented a picture of balance but would not want him any bigger. Super head and expression, correct bite, stands on straight limbs, feet could be better. Excellent neck and good lay of shoulder, leading into a strong, level topline. Strong, tight, muscled loin. Correct croup and tailset. Moved with reach and drive, well handled and I had no hesitation in awarding him Best Dog.

2. Upton’s Sh Ch Ragnolds Fantastic Mr Fox To Tragus. Excellent example of the breed, super size, superb coat, melting expression from his well balanced head. Good feet, straight limbs. Chest deep enough. Would prefer more angle to upper arm. Clean shoulders but a little forward placed. On the stack topline was always presented as sloping. Good rear with well let down hocks. Moved with drive and animation, well handled.

3. Godfrey’s Tragus Rudo

Veteran Dog no entries

Minor Puppy Bitch (3,1)

Two very raw youngsters with little to choose between them.

1. Nokes Hosokter Tisza At Goldpaw. Pretty but very raw almost 11 month old. Coat would benefit from stripping. Head OK, correct bite, straight limbs. Narrow throughout and lacking body depth, this could all change with maturity. Rangy but the correct length of body. Level topline and correct tail set and croup. When settled moved with drive. Best Puppy Bitch and Reserve Best Puppy in Show

2. Martindale’s Belatarr to Catch A Thief. 7 month old, very raw and rangy. Pleasing head, correct bite, super coat. Decent shoulders, chest needs to drop. More developed rear than front. Difficult to asses on the move as she was giddy and enjoying her day. These two could change places depending on the day.

Puppy Bitch (2)

Two very different bitches, perfectly illustrating the wide variation within the breed.

1. Nokes Hosokter Tisza At Goldpaw.

2. Revell’s Falcongreen Kizsca. Almost 12 month old. Correct medium size, dark single coat that as yet is not showing the required double Wire coat, this may come. Head balanced but a little plain due to lack of furnishings, eyes need to darken. Correct bite. Stood on straight limbs, tight feet. Deep chest, level topline, lacked angulation at the rear but a well developed front. Well muscled but could carry a little more weight. Moved OK.

Junior Bitch (4, 2)

1 Newman’s Morganna Star Anise. Quality, eye catching, medium sized bitch who presents a perfectly balanced picture. Super coat, head and expression, enhanced by dark eyes. Moderate throughout, she stands with her legs well under her, on tight feet. Chest deep enough, good lay of shoulder, level topline and excellent croup and tailset. Good width of second thigh. Moved with precise footfall, would prefer a tad more animation and tended to move a little close behind when moved too slowly but oozed quality and breed type. One I would like to take home. Reserve Best Bitch, Reserve Best in Show.

2 Johnston’s Zoldmali Mokka. Another lovely bitch. Balanced with an excellent coat. Head ok, would prefer more length of muzzle, correct bite. Straight limbs, good feet, correct chest depth. Decent lay of shoulder. Level topline, correct croup and tail set. Well developed rear, excellent width of second thigh. Well let down hocks. Moved well. Unlucky to meet 1 today.

Graduate Bitch (7, 2a, 1w/d)

1. Court’s Honey Buzzard. Easily won this class. Quality bitch with an excellent coat. Correct head and expression, correct bite. Balanced front and rear, good straight legs, would prefer better feet. Well ribbed, chest deep enough, strong loin. Level topline, correct croup. Moved without effort and with precise foot fall. With a little more confidence from dog and handler I am sure she will do as well as she should in the future.

2. Smith’s Indriel Aine. Taller, rangy bitch with a short, dark coat. Both 1 and 2 lacked confidence and ring presence. Head ok but a little plain and lacked furnishings. Correct bite. Deep chest, Good lay of shoulder, level topline, balanced front and rear. Correct croup and tailset. Moved well but lacked animation.

3. Aldridge’s Gwaithmaes Persephone.

Post Graduate Bitch (3)

1. Pike’s Herlinga Zaffron to Zilvarson. Pretty bitch, medium sized with an excellent coat. Balanced head, super expression, correct bite. Good length of upper arm, would prefer more angle. Correct length of neck leading into good shoulders, placed slightly too forward. Well angulated rear, good width of second thigh, correct croup and tail set. Handler tended to hold tail too high on stack spoiling her outline, which is very nice. Easily won this class.

2. Lewin’s Vynesbrook Savanna. Smaller, paler, very pretty bitch, medium sized. Decent coat. Correct head and melting expression, correct bite. Decent front, wouldn’t want her chest any deeper. Good shoulders, well developed rear but lost topline on the stack and move.

3. Smith’s Indriel Aine.

Limit Bitch (3,1)

1. Wearing’s Zoldmali Anizs At Glenusa.  Smaller bitch, excellent coat. Typical head, correct bite. Decent front, would prefer more lay of shoulder, chest deep enough, tuck up a little exaggerated. Would like more rear angulation, correct croup and tailset. Moved very well with animation and drive.

2. Revell’s Falcongreen Guba. Thought this would be my class winner. Medium sized, super coat and outline.  Stands on straight limbs, good feet. Pretty, typical head, melting expression, correct bite. Correct angulation to front and rear, good width of second thigh. Would prefer more length of neck to complete the picture. To my disappointment on the move this bitch pulled her neck into her body which affected her front movement and spoiled her outline and balance.

Open Bitch (6)

Best class of the day and very enjoyable to judge

1 Upton’s Tragus Honey Buzzard.  Took my eye immediately. This bitch’s presentation and condition was exceptional. Excellent dark, quality coat. Gorgeous head, melting expression with a glint in her eye. Correct bite. On the stack this bitch stood to perfection with her legs well under her, enough chest with plenty of heart and lung room, a level topline and superbly balanced angles front and rear.  She had everything I was looking for. Her front and rear are what we should, as breeders, aspire to. She took off round the ring with her tail lashing and a smile on her face, her footfall was precise and she moved with reach and drive. She was a joy to watch, and showed her best movement when moved at a moderate pace. I would happily take her home. Best Bitch, Best in Show.

2 Reed’s Sh Ch Cuffnell’s Sweet Violet. Another eye catching, quality bitch. Different type, longer cast and taller. Striking outline, beautiful head and expression, correct bite.  Superb coat. Balanced front and rear, deep chest, tuck up slightly exaggerated. Level topline, strong, well developed loin, correct croup and tailset. She moves effortlessly with an almost balletic, light as a feather gait. Her footfall is precise. Today she just could not match the ring presence and animation of 1. Very seriously considered for Reserve Best Bitch.

3 Wand’s Herlinga Heleva Sh. CM.

Veteran Bitch  (1

1 Nokes’s Kenmillix Sparta of Eurotas At Goldpaw. 8 year old bitch, first time in the ring and very much enjoying it. Nice head with a super expression. Correct bite. Tall and rangy in outline, decent coat. Chest ok, level topline. Once settled, she moved in a happy, animated manner

Critiques

The Hungarian W/h Vizsla Association held an open show where BIS was Sh Ch Ragnolds Fantastic Mr Fox to Tragus; RBIS, Herlinga Herleva; BP, Herlinga Zaffron to Zilvarson.

PD Two promising youngsters.

1 Howard’s Lanokk Szivos, pleasing youngster, typy head, eye yet to darken. Muzzle to skull proportions correct with enough furnishings. Strong straight legs, shorter cast, coat correct throughout. Needs to grow into back legs. Moved steady;

2 Mitchell’s Herlinga Auden, good balanced picture when settled. Bit bum high at the moment. Head pleasing, liked length of rib. Unsettled on the move.

JD

1 Spillane& Salisbury’s Bellatar Hercules, bigger made but balanced construction. Correct head & expression, correct coat, strong neck flowing into good topline held well on the move. Good depth of brisket, well tucked in elbow, moved steady & true;

2 Godfrey’s Tragus Fire King, flashy type, liked conformation, head correct with no coarseness. Tail set high which spoilt picture on the move. Good front extension, free mover.

GD

1 T Fire King;

2 Howard’s Zoldmali U R Special, smaller made, good feel to coat, darker in colour. Front make up OK, topline lacking with high tailset, decent sweep of stifle. Unsettled on the move.

PGD

1 Stephenson’s Leiborschy Lincoln of Fryerfold,

2 years young, pleasing young man in all areas. Enjoying his day out. Loved his head in proportion, eye, expression & furnishings. Well boned, balanced outline. Feet could be better.

LD Diverse type here.

1 B Hercules, won here for overall quality& balance. Found expression a tad harsh. Correct coat, balanced fore & aft, moved with extension & drive;

2 McLeish’s Cwsscwn Cadiz, completely different in many ways to 1. Best of heads on this chap, heavier in frame with longer pale coat, well muscled which showed in his free movement, shown in good condition.

OD

1 Upton’s Sh Ch Ragnolds Fantastic Mr Fox to Tragus, judged this chap as a puppy & was delighted to see he lived up to his promise. Head in profile superb, correct in length of muzzle to skull with intelligent expression, strong arched neck into well laid shoulders, sufficient bone, well ribbed body, gentle sweep of stifle led into strong hocks, presented in good condition. Ate up the ring with his free flowing movement. BD, BIS;

2 Harper’s Pitswarren Sirocco, close up to 1. Masculine dog, laid down in muscled condition, pleasing head, correct coat, good depth to brisket with well tucked in elbow, moved with purpose. RBD.

PB Two pretty ladies.

1 Pike’s Herlinga Zaffron to Zilvarson, lovely young lady, very feminine, liked body proportions & length, head sweet with good expression, good feel to coat. Ticked all the boxes. BP;

2 Wand’s Herlinga Hulda With Aswann, sister to 1, many of the same comments apply. Again correct head, although muzzle a tad longer. Not just as together as 1 at the moment. I am sure will change places often.

JB

1 Newman’s Morganna Cosmopolitan, liked this one, no frills, honest bitch who fits the Standard. Liked her size, build, strong slightly arched neck, level back, darker in colour but good feel to coat, sufficient furnishings, balanced picture on the move;

2 Richardson’s Tragus Apricot Beauty of Carlequin, another of correct size, sufficient bone, different coat to 1. Head pleasing with lively expression. Handler couldn’t quite get the best out of her. Moved alright.

GB

1 M Cosmopolitan;

2 T Apricot Beauty of C.

PGB

1 Bendikas’ Morganna Hotspice, full of nonsense, pity, couldn’t really assess as refused to play the game today. Shame as profile on the stand good, head, neck, feet correct, coat acceptable. Moved well in profile with good drive.

LB

1 Holman’s Silvanus Modesty Blaze, fitted the Standard well. Liked length to height ratio, gentle sweet expression on good head with slightly rounded skull, correct bone & feet, well ribbed back, good feel & look to coat. On the move true coming & going, in profile had extension & drive.

OB Super class to judge.

1 Wand & Rickman’s Herlinga Herleva, not the flashiest of ladies but exactly what I was looking for. Point for point this bitch is what the Standard asks for with no exaggerations. Shown in hard condition, pleasing head, balanced body fore & aft, very true on the move, free striding gait. BB, RBIS;

2 Reed’s Sh Ch Cuffnells Sweet Violet, best head of the day. Liked her size & substance, darker coat with correct texture, flashy outline on the move. She had an untypical gait which I found disappointing. Quality bitch nonetheless. RBB.

1st September 2013

PD ( 6,1 )

1 Upton’s Ragnolds Fantastic Mr Fox to Tragus. What a cracking young man who must have a very bright future. Good size, with the required substance but showing no signs of coarseness. Beautifully balanced throughout, best of heads with a lovely eye and expression, very clean over the neck and shoulders, well developed body for his age, best of quarters, in excellent coat of good texture, sound positive mover with great reach and drive, RBIS, RBD & BPIS.

2 Turton’s Odd Job of Blamtrinever. Not as mature as the winner but of excellent make and shape throughout. Balanced head of good proportions, good eye colour. Pleasing reach of neck set in well placed shoulders, firm level topline, good bend of stifle. Moved out well once he got into his stride.

JB ( 4 )

1 Smillie’s Oakberrow Gintastic. Quality throughout from every angle. Balanced outline and so well proportioned of correct height to length ratio that was lacking in many. So typical in head with a lovely eye and expression. Excellent front assembly, good depth of chest for her age with plenty of heartroom. Critiques

It was a great honour to be invited by the Association to judge their open show, my thanks to the committee for their invite, for their hospitality and for the provision of a superb steward. I was looking forward to the task of judging this lovely breed, and to be afforded such an excellent entry put the icing on the cake. I thank all who entered their dogs for my consideration.

I would like to make a few general observations which I hope are accepted by everyone in a positive manner. The breed on the whole has, for its numerically small size, a massive variation in type. Heads on the whole were pleasing, well shaped and well furnished. Fronts are not so great, with many coming towards me very wide and/or with weak pasterns. Feet in some were very poor, long nails and flat splayed feet which should not be prevalent in any gundog breed, long nails are easy to remedy. Coats were pretty good overall with only a few soft and fluffy. My greatest concern is temperament which seems to be deteriorating. The breed standard requires this breed to be “demonstrably affectionate”. Most worrying to find puppies with extremely nervous temperaments – please bear temperament in mind when considering your breeding plans. The depth of quality in the bitches was much greater than in males hence BIS, RBIS and BPIS were all claimed by the fairer sex. Handling overall could be improved; both in terms of stacking the dog and moving them. It was rather disappointing that some of the bitches “gave up” as time went on – handlers need to work with their charge to keep them alert and enjoying their showing experience throughout the class, rather than chatting with other exhibitors! I thank those present who accepted my decisions with good grace.

Puppy Dog (9,2)
Some temperaments were a worry; what may have been one of the best dogs in the class had to pay the price for being very worried and unable to be handled. I do hope he gets over it as he has great potential.
1 Stephenson’s Leiborschy Lincoln of Fryerfold. Very well grown male whose overall soundness clinched him this class. Balanced masculine head, strong neck and good shoulder. Straight front limbs, well ribbed for age. Moved out well enough for his age, BPD. Well handled and with a confident temperament. 2 Aldridge’s Gwaithmaes Shameless. Close up to the winner and another of good type, just at an awkward stage of growth however I would love to see how he develops in the future as he has a lot of promise. Owner gets the best from him, confident chap. 3 Collier’s Belatarr Dizzy Gillespie.

Junior Dog (3)
Difficult class, both had good temperaments and were enjoying their showing. 1 Draper’s Bardantop Blueberry. Won this class on his movement and body length. He has a well balanced and typical shape, is robust enough and in fit condition. Coat rather soft. Sympathetically handled. 2 Wild’s Herlinga Harlan. More compact in shape, with a better coat than the winner, however he just couldn’t match the winner on side gait today. Nicely shown and good temperament.

Post Graduate Dog (4)
1 McLeish’s Cwsscwn Cadiz. Very smart male of excellent type. Masculine head and correct expression, strong neck, well balanced fore and aft. Good coat, movement, type and temperament. Well handled and close up for RBD, he will be a strong contender for top awards in future years. 2 Godfrey’s Tragus Rudo. Well made chap, balanced and in good coat. Feet need attention. 3 Dodd’s Cuffnells Forester.

Limit Dog (2)
1 Fisher’s Leiborschy Ylam of Zamiyla. Well grown male, possesses a typical outline and impressive stature. Dark colour, with an excellent coat. Moved out with style however was a tad untidy coming towards me which cost him higher awards, perhaps having an off day. Handled slickly to get the best from him. 2 Godfrey’s Tragus Rudo.

Open Dog (3)
An interesting class, all three possess good points and could easily change places another day.
1 Holman’s Sh Ch Silvanus Oh Oh Seven. Excellent head on this veteran who was presented in fit condition and good coat, won on type and overall soundness. His expression is intelligent and slightly aristocratic. Good front, ribbing and strong couplings. Well angled quarters, excellent muscle tone and stands on great feet. Moved out very positively indeed, he is a credit to the breed and I now notice from the catalogue he has great potential as a sire. Even though he had two different runners as well as someone else stacking him his temperament is excellent and he coped with this admirably. BD & BOSIS. 2 Tolladay’s Cwsscwn Chanzer at Bethersden. Close up to the winner and of excellent type. Well made, great balance and good coat, just carrying a little too much weight. Feet need attention but gained this place on good front angulation. 3 Upton & Rowan’s Tragus Jakobi.

Puppy Bitch (10)
Class of quality, some giving away a bit in age but a lot of potential for the breed here which was encouraging.
1 Morgan & Schofield’s Cwsscwn Calico. Really sweet puppy with the most delightful temperament and spirited air. She has a sweet head, melting expression and correctly balanced skull. Reachy neck, good shoulder and upper arm angulation. Ribs extend well back, strong over the loin and her tailset is correct. Hindquarters well angled and muscled enabling a strong driving action. In the final go around just preferred her more open side gait over 2 Upton’s Tragus Honey Buzzard, for which the same remarks generally apply, just preferred the front angles and reach of 1. Both are promising young ladies and I will watch their progress with great interest. 3 May’s Amiryck Dabinett.

Junior Bitch (8,1)
1 Morgan & Schofield’s Cwsscwn Calico. 2 Stone’s Moricroft Mayfair to Sonnetend. Close up to the winner, this young lady shows great potential. Good type, well balanced and presented in great condition. Stands on good feet and moved out positively with accurate footfall. 3 Kelly & Shumiloff’s Tragus Song Thrush.

Graduate Bitch (3)
1 Fisher’s Zamiyla Sztar. A very impressive young lady whose eye catching movement could not be overlooked. Possesses great reach from a good front and drive from her well angled and balanced quarters, really covers the ground on the go around. Sweet head and expression all rounded off by a harsh jacket. Close up for top honours, in another year she will be troubling the best. 2 Revell’s Falcongreen Guba. Nice outline, good coat and good feet however today she was somewhat erratic in front action. 3 Wearing’s Zoldmali Duna At Genlusa.

Post Graduate Bitch (4)
1 Morgan & Schofield’s Cwsscwn Chanzy. My star of the day, she appealed in all departments. Best of heads, skull of correct balance. Well shaped eye of good colour, ears correctly set. Strong neck leading to super lay of shoulder with complimentary return of upper arm. Well developed brisket and depth of forechest. Ribs well sprung and extending well back to strong loin. Excellent rear angles, low hocks and very well muscled. Stands on the best of feet and coat is excellent. On the move she is very accurate away and back with a ground covering side gait. Slightly mischievous but her handler was calm and certainly got the best from her, I am confident she will gain top honours and her title. BB & BIS, well done. 2 Reed’s Cuffnells Sweet Violet. This is a good quality b who was just overshadowed by the winner on the day who was on top form. Good head, front, ribbing and hindquarters. Moved out well and nicely handled. 3 Wearing’s Zoldmali Ubrez at Genlusa.

Limit Bitch (6)
Thought this was a great class on first look around however some put on a disappointing performance.
1 Newman’s Morganna Allspice. Smart, typical bitch with excellent coat. Good head, neck and shoulders. Well sprung ribs, strong loin. Nicely angled quarters giving good balance. Presented in excellent muscle tone and moved out very positively with reach and drive, lovely type and well handled by her clever breeder. She seems to lack a little enthusiasm and would be easy to overlook, but her size and soundness clinched the win here. 2 Smith’s Tragus Ayana. Another good bitch, close up to the winner but preferred the overall size of 1. That said, she is well made, balanced in construction and moved out showing excellent reach and drive. Good coat and well handled. 3 Holman’s Silvanus Modesty Blaise.

Open Bitch (4)
Grand class of quality ladies, the first three could probably change places another day however some were performing better than others and thus those who weren’t moving enthusiastically paid the price.
1 Cairn’s Ir Ch Incahoots at Galicar. Top quality bitch possessing a typical and feminine outline. Loved her head and expression, reachy neck and excellent shoulders. Good return of upper arm which enabled great forward reach on the move. Well ribbed back, strong over the loin and croup with well muscled and angled quarters. Great coat. Moved out very positively really covering the ground. Very close decision for BB, hence she was RBB and RBIS. I am sure her title will not be far away in the UK too. 2 Richardson’s Tragus Zuri. Good body and type on this bitch, she is classic in outline. Correct head and balanced fore and aft she just wasn’t as tidy away and back on the day. That said she was enthusiastic and enjoying her job which gained her this place over a nice bitch who was 3 Wand’s Herlinga Herleva.

Critiques

I would like to thank the HWVA for their invitation to judge their Open Show and Colin Woodward for being my very efficient Steward and not least the exhibitors for their entry and sportsmanship.

The usual varieties in coat still is to the fore but size did concern me with many exhibits, although very well constructed, there was just too much of them so breeders need to watch this for the future of this lovely breed. Some quality youngsters coming along which is good to see.

Critiques

The Hungarian W/h Vizsla Association held an open show where BIS was Farnfield Pussy Galore of Galicar; BOS, Moricroft Mojito; & BP, Herlinga Herleva.

MPD (3) All three with such potential & plenty to like. I Rickman’s Herlinga Herveus, while head is still needing to develop. Scored in harsh coat texture, firm front pasterns & tight feet; 2 Hibbert’s Cwsscwyn Perchanze To Dream to Mindszenty, I liked his head & expression, length of rib & short loin. Just needing to firm up in front pasterns & quarters, coat texture still needing to harshen; 3 Scourfield’s Danton Senator.

PD (9, I ) A trio of lovely youngsters. Good class, some coats were soft & glossy which influenced my placings. I May’s Amiryck Vega, masculine, well grown, well balanced head, good eye, set, shape & expression, excellent coat texture, confident, true on the move, impressive in profile. BPD: 2 McLeish’s Cwsscwn Cadiz, super youngster, liked his head, eye, ear shape & set, grand expression, strong neck into well constructed shoulder, good length of rib, excellent coat texture, confident temperament. Just needing to firm up in rear movement; 3 Lincoln’s Moricroft Malbec.

JD (5) 1 Hall’s Vadakasca Speyburn of Aranyhaz, strong, masculine, in hard muscular condition, balanced head, bright expression, plenty of character, good front, strong neck, firm topline, good length & angulation of upper arm, good length & spring of rib, harsh coat, happy & confident on the move; 2 Ricketts’ Cwsscwn Choritzer, looking very immature at this age but gained this place for his overall type, coat & confidence; 3 Crew’s Moricroft Moments.

N D (9) I V Speyburn of A; 2 C Cadiz; 3 Chaffe’s Kenmillix Iris Acis.

PG D (5) I Delf’s Starshot Laird, very dignified, sound in body & temperament, well developed, balanced head, scored in straight front, tight feet & his movement, true front & rear, covered the ground in profile with a steady, dignified gait, excellent coat texture: 2 K Iris Acis, mature, well ribbed, strong loin, bright expression, moved OK. Could have tighter feet; 3 C Choritzer.

LD (6) I Baker’s Kenmillix King Of Athens at Travaillant, grand dog, all male, liked his head & alert expression, correct length/height body proportions, strong neck into firm topline, well ribbed, strong loin, excellent coat texture & furnishings, outstanding for temperament, moved well for his handler; 2 Upton’s Tragis Red Bear, another grand dog with correct body proportions & properties, correct harsh coat texture, liked his expression. Took a while to settle; 3 Ricketts’ Cwysscwn Chiritzer.

OD (5) Really impressive class. I Thompson’s Moricroft Mojito, masculine, balanced head, lovely eye, ear shape & set, most appealing expression, strong neck, good length & angulation of blade & upper arm, good length, depth & spring of rib, strong loin, muscular quarters – nothing overdone or exaggerated, excellent coat texture & furnishings, moved true, impressive tail & head carriage in profile. BD; 2 Upton’s Tragus Fred Astaire, impressive outline, strong neck into firm topline, well balanced body, well ribbed, good front & feet, in firm, hard, muscular condition, correct texture coat. RBD; 3 Stafford’s Farfield Cock Robyn.

MPB (3) I Rickman & Wand’s Herlinga Herleva, headed a trio of lovely puppies, liked her head & the most lovely bright appealing expression, good eye shape & set, clean strong neck into firm topline, good length & angulation of blade & upper arm, straight front, tight feet. Even at this age good spring & depth of rib, short strong loin, well muscled angulated quarters, looking perfectly balanced, in excellent coat of correct texture, confident temperament & then moved true, very impressive in profile. BP; 2 Holman’s Silvanus Modesty Blaze, the most sweet expression, feminine but with sufficient substance, good length of rib, short loin, balanced quarters, correct coat texture, not carrying any excess weight, very happy on the move; 3 Morgan & Schofield’s Cwsscwn Chanzy.

PB (9) I Rickman’s Kidson Xcels at Herlinga, impressive outline, good eye, ear shape & set, strong neck, good length & angulation of blade & upper arm, good length of rib, correct coat texture, moved true, impressive in profile with excellent head & tail carriage; 2 Trow’s Cwsscwn Clazique at Winterwel, lovely feminine youngster but with sufficient substance, the sweetest of expressions, good body proportions & properties, correct texture coat. Just needing to tighten in front movement at this age; 3 Campbell’s Cwsscwn Cassandra at Blackcraig.

JB (3) I Layman’s Danton Whisper, liked her head & gentle expression, good front & feet, impressive balanced body, good length & angulation of blade & upper arm, good length & spring of rib, firm topline, correct coat texture, happy on the move; 2 Branney’s Tarndair Phoenix of Belatarr, well grown, plenty of strength, impressive outline, very appealing expression, in hard muscular condition, sound confident temperament; 3 Wearing’s Zoldmali Ubrez at Gensula.

NB (11) I Rickman & Williamson’s Brooksel Oslin, confident, mature, well ribbed, presented a very workmanlike outline; 2 Wearing’s Zoldmali Ubrez at Gensula, had gained confidence by this class, made in a smaller but very well balanced body, firm topline, really good harsh coat texture, good tailset & carriage; 3 Johnson’s Blamtrinever Dancing Queen.

PGB (12) Good typy class. I Guest’s Moricroft Maple via Bardantop, won this class, not only on her well constructed body, solid muscular condition, really harsh texture coat & good furnishings but also her attitude, absolutely solid, determined biddable, gave the impression she would do anything for her owner, moved true, covered the ground in profile, gave the impression of a working gundog; 2 Tompson’s Moricroft Mata Of Love, very feminine, lovely gentle, alert expression, clean arched neck into firm topline, mature, well ribbed body of correct proportions, in full coat of harsh texture, good furnishings, sound on the move; 3 Smith’s Tragus Lily Of The Mohawks.

LB (5, I ) A nice quartet, separated by minor `on the day’ points. I Sadler’s Starshop English Miss for Morehay, liked her body proportions & properties, straight front, tight feet, firm front pasterns, good length, sufficient depth & spring of rib, balanced shoulder to quarters, moved soundly, covered the ground well in profile; 2 T Apache Feather, her head & expression really appealed, good length & angulation of blade & upper arm, scored with her excellent coat texture & furnishings. Could have been more positive in rear movement; 3 Lawson’s Riannor Lenci.

OB (4, I ) I Smillie’s Farnfield Pussy Galore of Galicar, thought her just outstanding, the best of expressions, alert but gentle, liked the length/height ratio or her strong, well constructed body but still very feminine, strong arched neck into firm topline, good length & angulation of blade & upper arm, good length, depth & spring of rib, strong loin & quarters, in harsh texture coat, good furnishings, showed her biddable temperament by moving with such soundness for her new handler, good tailset & carriage. BIS; 2 Morgan & Schofield’s Cwsscwn Chintz, superb for type, beautifully balanced head, bright expression, strong arched neck into strong, compact, well constructed body, excellent harsh coat, good furnishings, moved true, covered the ground well in profile. Not quite the tail carriage of I . RBB; 3 Summerfield’s Ayita Wedding Day of Miadsc.

V (3) Lovely to see veterans. Personally I love to see them but hate to have to place them. All so deserving of awards. I Caine’s Kenmillone Chimbota; 2 Thompson’s Bareve Sandpiper over Moricroft; 3 Dempster’s Kidsons Russian Hero Miatt Madilor.

FT (3) Pleasing to see this very important aspect of the gundog world proving that the reason a breed was produced was for its working function. Beauty & type should also have the ability to perform their functions. I Guest’s Bardontop Rochester Gramd, strong masculine dog; 2 May’s Ragnolds Meadow Brown of Amiryck, brains plus beauty; 3 Caine’s Kenmillone Chimbata.

Brace I Guest’s dog & bitch, nicely matched, similar head & body, moved in unison.

Critiques

Many thanks to the committee in inviting me to judge at this show, I found that there was a great variety in type within the breed but they have come a long way since I first judged them in 1993

PUPPY DOG (2, O abs)
1 Walker’s Gosflight Tallon of Lannok 11 month dog of deep russet colour, nice head with sufficient beard. Intelligent expression level topline and good tailset. Good lay of shoulder with straight front legs. Needs to drop in chest. Moved freely around the ring to win BPIS

2 Upton’s Tragus Red Baron Paler coloured than 1 with a slightly longer coat of harsh texture. Good depth of chest and level back, moderate hind angulations with well let down hocks preferred the expression and movement of 1
3 Dodd’s Ragnolds Nimrod 15 months old, deep russet in colour, moderate hind angulation with medium set ears. Correct body proportions, would have preferred more facial furnishings.

GRADUATE DOG (4, 2)
1 Dodd’s Arnold’s Nimrod
2 Gars tang’s Kisdons Version A dog of medium size with good body proportions, slightly sloping croup and good tailset. Moderate lay of shoulder and tight feet, another boy that lacked facial furnishings.

POST GRADUATE DOG (3, 1)
1 Proctor’s Leborschy Stefan Well balanced with well proportioned head, moderately well muscled neck with level back, deep chest which reached to the elbow. Straight legs and tight arched feet, moved with drive
2 Jones’s Madilor Midwinter at Spurhammer Paler coloured than 1 with softer coat. Good depth of chest, moderate angulation both fore and aft. Nice kind expression.

1 Boyes’/Korkis Starshot Harvest Moon Liked this dogs overall shape and size Moderate broad skull with moderate stop. Correct scissor bite, slightly oval eyes and sufficient facial furnishings. Harsh wiry coat covering body. Neck slightly arched with good lay of shoulder, correct tailset. Preferred his free driving movement to 2.

Critiques

I would like to thank the HWVA for their invitation to judge the open show and also thank the exhibitors for the sporting way in which they accepted my placings. I really enjoyed my day and with my competent steward, Colin, it was an excellent day.

On a general basis the breed does seem to be getting more even in breed type although there is still a lot of variance within size and coat. One area that breeders need to watch is front angulation. Layback of shoulder seems to be very good but there are a few who have very short and straight upperarms, which does have an affect on the day the dog’s moves. As far as movement was concerned the hind action, on the whole, was much better than the front actions with a few flipping pasterns and a couple who were really pounding on the front. On the whole hind angualtion was good but a couple were short in second thigh which then meant the point of hock lacked correct angulation resulting in correct hock to ground. Coats were pretty good considering the time of year – most have a good wirey texture and sufficient depth of coat.

From my two quality line-up’s I gave BIS to Parry’s LEIBORSCHY YENDAH ShCM. I’ve liked this bitch before and haven’t changed my mind. She has a lovely balanced head with the darkest of eyes giving a kind expression, good boned limbs and tight feet, lengthy neck into the best front angulation on the day, well sprung ribs reaching back, strong loins, good topline and croup, well angulated behind, good coat texture with depth of coat, moved very soundly and on a long profile stride.

RBIS was Smilie & Cairn’s FARNFIELD PUSSY GALORE OF GALICAR well upto size, strong bitch but very balanced. Long head with a lovely expression, strong muzzle, well boned limbs and tight feet, strong neck of good length, well placed shoulders, good depth and spring of ribs reaching well back, not quite so strong in topline as BIS, well angulated behind, in lovely coat and moved well.

BOS was Guest’s BARTONTOP ROCHESTER coming from the F/T class. A dog I have seen in F/T’s showing he is a true dual purpose dog. Strong, well grown dog but once again very balanced. Lovely head with the darkest of eyes giving a very kind expression, strong muzzle, excellent boned limbs, good pasterns and tight feet, strong neck into clean shoulders, deep ribs reaching well back, very good hindquarters, a little steep in croup, excellent coat, moved well.

BPIS was a son of my BIS winner in Stockwell’s LEIBORSCHY YLAI. Well grown youngster but correct size for his age, balanced heard, good eye colour, strong muzzle, strong lengthy neck, adequate boned limbs, good angulation behind, moved well and in good coat – very promising.

PUPPY DOG (2)
1st LEIBORSCHY YLAI Critique above
2nd Pope & Howard’s LEIBORSCHY YUSEF Litter brother, well grown dog, broad skull, good coloured eyes and expression, well boned legs and feet, deep in brisket, short coupled, moderate angualtion behind, moved OK.

JUNIOR DOG (4) 1st Tolladay, Morgan & Schofield CWSSCWN CHANZER AT BETHERSDEN
Well grown shapely youngster, balanced head, lovely expression and good muzzle, oval boned limbs with plenty of give in pasterns, good feet, good length of neck, well placed shoulders and upper arm, deep brisket, very well angulated behind, in lovely coat and condition, moved well just would like a little less action on the front. I’m sure he will finish a very eye catching dog.
2nd Chaffe KENMILLIX IRIS ACIS
Lovely sized dog, broad skull, good expression but eye colour need to keep darkening, lovely boned limbs and good feet, strong neck, very good lay back of shoulder and length of upperarm, well sprung ribs, well angulated behind, in good coat but needs a little tidying up with removing the dead coat, moved well.

Critiques

Firstly I would like to thank the Committee for inviting me to judge this prestigious event at this lovely venue. We were blessed with wonderful weather, so thatW the breed could be seen at their best outside in the glorious sunshine. I feel the breed has come on in leaps & bounds over the last couple of years & I am delighted to report I saw not one bad mouth or temperament. Secondly I apologize for the lateness of my report due to personal commitments. I had an excellent entry of quality d’s considering Richmond Ch Show was held on the same day & every d, even if it stood alone in its class, thoroughly deserved its prize

MPD (3). 1 Sutton’s Leiborcschy Elek. 8 months old p, hope he doesn’t grow on any more. Beautiful coat & colour, excellent head shape & ear set. Good mouth, moved v well, well angulated fore & aft; 2 Lincoln’s Moricroft Maguey. 7 months old p. v similar to 1st in class, lovely head & expression, eyes need to darken, which I am sure they will with age. Good foreface, excellent feet, moved well, good mouth, sired I see by my BIS winner; 3 Spencer’s Ragnolds Rufus. All the p’s were v exuberant, as you would expect at this age, so it took a while to get them to settle.

PD 1 Parry’s Leiborschy Wilfek. Alone in this class, 8 mnths old p. with great presence, excellent angulation fore & aft, good forechest. Good coat & colour in excellent condition, good head & expression, nice tight feet, correct mouth. Moved v well, v mature p for his age, had no hesitation in awarding him BPIS.

JD 1 Lowthers Travaillant Moses. Again alone in this class, lovely d, just 2 days over 1 yr old, correct mouth, good coat & colour, excellent head & expression, good ear set. Nicely angulated fore & aft, nice tight feet, lovely forechest, well dropped in brisket, moved round the ring really well. Had no hesitation in leaving him in for final four for BIS.

ND (3). 1 Bebbington’s Zoldmali Dukat At Gonegos. 21 mnths old gold coloured d with the true Vizsla expression, excellent earset, as Sheila Gray one wrote in one of her articles, ëthe ears when used correctly resemble an African elephant charging V. Correct mouth, nice tight feet, good eye colour, could do with slightly more forechest. Has a full tail, but this did not detract from his excellent outline. Moved around the ring as though he was floating on air. Had no hesitation in awarding him RBD & RBIS; 2 Herberts Ayita Independence Day. 19 mnth old d of completely different type to 1. Needs to drop in brisket, paler in colour, correct mouth, could do with more bend of stifle, nice head & expression & correct mouth; 3 Palmer & Avery’s Kenmilquin Nereus.

PGD (4). 1 Walker’s Bayside Brook. 2 yr old d, correct size, beautiful coat & colour, shown to perfection. Lovely eye colour, excellent head planes & parallels, correct mouth, moved beautifully both in profile & fore & aft. Correct angulations, to be hyper-critical, for my taste he was just a trifle feminine: 2 Skinner & Skinner’s Leiborschy Ido Of Vorosarkary. 20 mnth old d, excellent jacket, good forechest, well angulated fore & aft, a trifle on the tall side. Correct mouth, correct Vizsla head with good stop, plenty of furnishing without being overdone. Moved well, overall a pleasing d to look at; 3 Thompson’s Moricroft Mojito.

LD (2). 1 Brier’s Leiborschy Melek. 20 mnths old d, lovely harsh jacket, well angulated fore & aft, correct mouth, good forechest, lovely eye colour Moved round the ring with a real ground covering gait. However, fore & aft he was slightly close behind & toed in a bit coming towards me. Overall another good specimen; 2 Herberts I Day.

OD (4). 1, BIS, Caines Kenmillone Chimbot. 5 yr old d. He strode into the ring as if he owned it & just said “Look at me I’m the best”, & he was, a real stallion of a d, with everything in the right place, maybe a tad too tall for some, but has everything about him to like, excellent colour, condition & wiry coat, beautiful head & expression, well anqulated fore & aft. Moved round the ring as though he owned it, correct mouth. Should be an asset to the breed as a stud, as he also has plenty of working ability; 2 Bebbington’s Zachary Des Champs Des Dune At Goregos. 6 yr old d. One I have always like, although a trifle on the dark side for my taste. Correct mouth, lovely coat, excellent tight feet, moved really well. He has a correct length of croup, but just a slight kink in his tail, this is not due to a high tailset however. Well angulated fore & aft, with good forechest, unlucky to have come up against the winner today, 3 Guest’s Bardontop Rochester.

MPB (2). 1 Caines Moricroft Mimosa. 7 mnths old b sired by my BIS, lovely temperament, good type, excellent angulation, fore & aft, moved v well, correct mouth, needs to tighten up everywhere but is still v immature. Good forechest for such a youngster, nice tight feet, overall a v pleasing specimen.

JB 1 Collin’s Throstlenest Kyla. Lovely b, just a few days out of p, superb on the move, excellent topline in profile & looked sound fore & aft. Correct mouth & angulations, lovely coat & colour, good head, would prefer more stop which I’m sure will develop with age. Altogether a v pleasing specimen.

NB 1 Mistykara Travaillant. 2 yr old b, of excellent type, in beautiful condition. Good head & expression, lovely tight feet, good bone, v feminine b, without being ëneedy, excellent angulations fore & aft. Lovely coat & colour, outstanding on the move. Correct mouth & fantastic outline, had no hesitation in awarding her RBB.

PGB (3). 1 Summerfields Ayita Wedding Day. 19 mnth old b, beautiful head & expression, excellent movement, correct mouth, good furnishings, excellent harsh jacket, tight feet, good forechest, correct colour, gold & not too dark; 2 Woolridges Moricroft Molise. 20 mnth old b, slightly heavier built than 1 & a bit more ëdoggy’ in head. However, a pleasing b to go over, correct mouth, lovely ear set, nice tight feet, good depth of brisket, excellent angulations, moved well with good drive; 3 Dempster’s Moricroft Moonshine,

LB (5). 1 Schofield & Morgan’s Silvanus Moll Flanders. 3 yr old b with excellent wire coat, v pretty correct feminine head, one of the best forechests I’ve seen. Shown to perfection, carrying slightly more weight than I normally like to see. Constructed completely correctly, good mouth. Excellent angulations, moved well in profile & fore & aft. Overall a v pleasing picture; 2 Parry’s Leiborschy Lajka. 3 yr old b with excellent coat. Correct mouth, excellent angulations, slightly plainer in head than 1, lovely dark eye, correct forechest, tight feet, moved beautifully, both in profile & fore & aft. Again a v pleasing specimen; 3 Thompson’s Moricroft Mata Hari. This was a trio of really beautiful b’s & I had some difficult decisions to make all in all it was v close.

OB 1 Thompson’s Bareve Sandpiper Over Moricroft. 6 yr old b, dark red & with excellent jacket, good bone, excellent hindquarters, & also well angulated on the front, correct bite, nice dark eye to match her coat, moved well, both in profile & fore & aft Overall a v pleasing specimen; 2 Parry’s Leiborschy Yendah. Almost 3 yrs old, a v beautiful b, think that these two could change places anytime. Again excellent topline, v well shown. Lovely tight wire jacket, good angulations, fore & aft, correct mouth, excellent temperament, lovely head & expression, good forechest, nice tight feet, looked stunning on the move; 3 Schofield & Morgan’s Silvanus Ezmi. Again these three completed a trio of really stunning b’s.

VD/B 1 Guest’s Silvanus Queen Victoria Ruling Bardantop, BBIS. A totally magnificent b that completely belies her age of nearly 8. In excellent condition, beautiful head & expression, correct mouth, lovely jacket, beautiful colour, moved really well in profile & fore & aft. Excellent angulations & forechest. Tight feet, correct mouth, lovely dark eye, a b that is v difficult to find fault with; 2 Dempster’s Moricroft Moffat. 10 and a half yr old d, another that doesn’t look nearly his age. Good forehand, correct dentition, nice harsh coat, slight tendency to hunch his topline in profile on the move, but overall still a v nice specimen.

BEGINNERS D/B (3). 1 Herberts A I Day; 2 Palmer & Avery’s K Nereus.

SPECIAL WORKING TEST D/B (5). 1 Guest’s Silvanus Queen Victoria Ruling Bardantop; 2 Bebbington’s Gonegos Sarika. 3 yr old b, one I have always liked, unlucky to meet the winner, again a stunning russet gold b with lovely forehand & bend of stifle, correct mouth, lovely head & expression, looked good on the move. Lovely tight feet, again v difficult to fault; 3 Guest’s Bandantop Rochester.

FIELD TRIAL D/B 1 Caines Kenmilone Chimbola.

BRACE (2). 1 Bebbington’s Zachary Des Champs Des Dune At Gonegos & Gonegos Sarika. Father & daughter, alike as two peas in a pod. Moved round the ring beautifully in unison, & looked as fit as fleas & fantastically workmanlike.

NOT BRED BY EXHIBITOR: D/B (6). 1 Caines’ K Chimbola; 2 Summerfield’s A W Day: 3 Caine’s M Mimosa.
