NOVICE TRIAL

29th January, 2025

The HWVA held its last Field Trial of the season on 29th January 2025 which was also the final trial of the year.

Following many days of rain and storms across the country this day started and continued with sunshine and big blue skies, a perfect end to the Trialling season. We are so grateful to William Thornhill and the Haverholme Estate for their continued support for the HWVA; Keeper Nigel, guns Philip, Gary, Andy and Tristran and game carrier, the young Jake at his first HPR trial . More than grateful to picking up dog Carl Isitt who also helps us with logistics and arrangements locally and to Rupert (Zafar) volunteering to be our red flag. Thanks also to our Judges, Steve Robson and Christine Carpenter, for their excellent work, they were pleased to make the following awards:

4th Madagascar Madge via Valkaiser handled by Julie King .. HWV

COM CH Enryb Simply Red handled by Jean Byrne .. HWV

And the guns award to:

Avar Hunter Danube Flovakia handled by Adele Zafar for his very stylish point. HV

It was lovely to see all gingers in the awards.

OPEN STAKE FIELD TRIAL

The HWVA held their HPR 3rd Open Stake Field Trial on Danby Moor on Friday 11th October 2024.
Our Judges Jean Robertson A and Jason Hudson B gave two awards:
  • FIRST PLACE to Geoff Saint and Zoldmali Tarlo
  • SECOND PLACE to Emily Hinchcliffe and Goosepoint Gambler
Guns Award also went to Emily Hinchcliffe and Goosepoint Gambler

The day was made even more special as Geoff Saint and Zoldmali Tarlo were made up as the latest Field Trial Champion for the HWV Breed; he was so pleased he did this at an HWV Open Trial (Subject to KC approval!).

The day started with a slight frost but it turned out to be a fabulous day on the moor; the sun shone, there were enough birds, although slightly flighty!  I think everyone enjoyed the day.

We would like to thank Lord Dawney for this special access to the moor, his Head Keeper Peter Snaith, and Estate Manager James Stephenson.

We would also like to thank the Judges for their careful considerations.

The Guns did a great job, as did our Red Flag, Amanda Tasker.  Many thanks to these and all who helped out on the day, including Debby Wearing for the pictures.

Finally, a big thank-you to our sponsors, Skinners Dog Food and Test Valley Lanyards.

Judges Critique
All competitors had game on their beats, each dog had either a lead or cheek wind. After the first round was completed, there were 6 dogs remaining.

Running number 1, Zoldmali Tarlo running with drive and style covering the ground enthusiastically; at no time did the dog lose connection, came on point, produced the bird, unfortunately the bird was missed.

Tarlos, second run, was very similar but produced two points and two workmanlike retrieves, this completed his card.

SUMMER GROUSE EXPERIENCE AND TEST.

The HWVA held a second 3 day Grouse weekend on 2nd-4th August . Quite a warm weekend, but it was very nice for all to be out on the moors in the sunshine after the wet spring. Grouse were said to be poor in number this year due to the early weather, but there was a sufficiency in the Egton area for our event. The weekend was capably and efficiently run by Debby and Ian Wearing, and Amanda Tasker in my absence.
We remain grateful to Roy Bebbington who facilitates these days for us and for his helpful experience, and to the Keeper for allowing us onto their ground and supporting the HWVA.
The Grouse Pointing Test was held on Saturday 3rd August, our judges were Jason Hudson and Alex Card.
They made only one award of GOOD to Deb Bowns and her dog Sigourney Viper
The best run was awarded to Nigel Samson and his dog Canalgame Giovanni.
Many Congratulations to both.

SPRING GROUSE WEEKEND AND TEST.

The HWVA held a Mega 3 day Grouse weekend from Friday, 22nd March through Sunday, 24th March.
We were blessed, once again, with being on the North York Moors. The weather was mostly dry, not too cold but it was very, very windy, although the wind did abate a little for the test day.
The two days of Grouse Experience proved to be a couple of the best, plenty of grouse and plenty of great work from the dogs. Some entrants used the days to prepare for the tests on Sunday, some were returning regulars and a couple of new people for their first enlightenment of what their dogs are capable of.

The HWVA held its GROUSE POINTING TEST on Sunday, 24th March on the North York Moors and also the HWVA Selection Assessment Day for the Vizsla and Wirehaired Vizsla Teams for the Europa Cup
Judges were Peter Szalai and Roy Bebbington.

The Gradings were:
JUNIOR
Gilleyfield Cosmos handled by Julie King – Excellent
Zoldmali Esme handled by Amanda Tasker – Very Good
ADULT
Lindenwood Hocus Pocus Handled by Natasha Steeden – Good
Canalgame Giovanni handled by Nigel Samson – Good

Chilly Chellumbrun was the additional Judge for the Team GB assessment. Four dogs were put through to the Assessment day and three further dogs were asked to put themselves forward to a further pre-assessment day.
• Roxombury Stevie Nicks for Vadkartya (HV); Kate Eames
• Lindenwood Hocus Pocus (HV); Natasha Steedon
• Nemzet Gloria at Karrouki (HV); Suzanna Mills
• Canalgame Giovanni (HWV); Nigel Samson
We also added some fundraising into the day to help fund the Europa Team and raised £130 towards the pot for the team expenses.

Judges Field Trial Report

The Hungarian Wirehaired Viszla Association

18th January 2024

Open 12 Dog HPR Trial

An Open Stake for all HPR breeds. Held at The Upton Pyne Shoot. By kind permission of the host and Keeper Mr. Paul Bowyer.

Weather Conditions

A cold frosty start, with temperatures slowly warming to 13 degrees. Wind conditions were light and consistent throughout the trial. Scenting conditions were initially quite difficult, getting better as the air temperature warmed throughout the trial.

Type of Ground

The ground offered a variety of cover crops, water meadows, hedgerows, woodland and some white grass and scrubby areas.

Species of Game

Pheasant, Partridge, Snipe and Duck

The sub-zero morning temperatures meant that dogs would need to work hard to find their game. Late season birds were difficult to catch up with. However, the standard of these top quality open standard dogs, meant that a significant number of birds were, found, pointed and shot.

Unfortunately, the quality of the dogs is not reflected in the fact that we were unable to offer any awards on this occasion. The ground, the scent and the luck, just didn’t roll in the direction of so many talented dogs. As we are all so well aware, ‘That’s Trialling.’

A superbly organised Trial with thanks to, Field Trial Secretary Debra Revell for her hard work and organisation. A huge debt of gratitude is owed to The Keeper, Mr Paul Bowyer for allowing us to use this superb Trialling Ground.

A quality team of experienced Guns ensured the plentiful supply of game was accounted for. Their skill, experience and knowledge contributed significantly to the efficiency and very successful outcome of this trial.

May I also take the opportunity to thank my senior judge, Mr. Steve Chant for his expert advice, encouragement and mentoring, making this Judging appointment a real pleasure.

Finally, I would like to thank the Hungarian Wirehaired Viszla Association for offering me this Judging Appointment.
